Walter L. McDade's Obituary
TOLEDO, IL - Walter L. McDade, age 90 of Toledo and a former long-time Charleston resident, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2013 in the comfort of his home. Visitation will be held Monday, November 25, 2013 from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Funeral Services honoring and celebrating his life will be held immediately following visitation on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral chapel with Reverend Kent Conover officiating. Burial with Military Rites conducted by the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592 will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Mattoon. It is requested that thoughtful donations in his honor be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Walt was born on September 7, 1923 in Morgan Township, Coles County, Illinois, one of six sons born to the late Talmage V. and Helen C. (Trager) McDade. He married Zeta Mary Grissom on February 14, 1942 at the St. Charles Rectory in Charleston and they have been blessed with 71 years of marriage, friendship and family. In addition to his wife Mary, Walt is survived by two children, Steve McDade and wife Brenda and Debra Ohnesorge and husband Dennis, all of Toledo; six grandchildren, Mike McDade of Rock Hill, SC, Tina (Mark) Warfel of Lincoln, IL, Amy Jacobsen of Chillicothe, OH, Mindy (Brock) Stewart of Litchfield, IL, Ben Ohnesorge and fiancé Christy of Troy, IL and Shanna Taylor of Toledo; 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded by a daughter, Linda Louise McDade, his brothers, Vernon, Raymond, John, Clarence and Paul; and two sisters, Hazel Brown and Gertrude Sims. Walt was a United States Army Veteran and proudly and honorably served his country during World War II. He was an employee of Midstate Foundry in Charleston for 33 years where he was known by his fellow employees as Mac. He later went to work for Eastern Illinois University, a position he held for 10 years before retiring. He was a life member of the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592 of Charleston, a member of American Legion Post 764 of Toledo and a prior member of the Charleston Moose Lodge #1388. Walt was devoted to his family and to providing for their needs. He possessed a work ethic that was to be admired - in addition to working a full time job he worked weekends painting houses. He enjoyed woodworking in his spare time as well as bowling, boating, and camping with his family.
