Virginia Turner Tate's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Virginia Turner Tate, age 103 of Charleston and retired schoolteacher, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2018 while at her Charleston Rehab and Health Care Center home. Funeral Services honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Adams Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tom Farris officiating. The interment service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at Crescent Heights Cemetery located in Pleasant Hill, Illinois. There will be no public visitation. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the Coles County Animal Shelter. Gifts may be left at the service or mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.Virginia was born August 21, 1914 in Okolona, Arkansas, the daughter of Ernest and Mabel (Burley) Tate. She is survived by a nephew, Howard Tate and wife Arlene of Potomac, Maryland; a niece, Virginia Smythe and husband Robert of Owings, Maryland; two great-nephews, Sean Tate and Jonathan (Kimberly) Smythe; a great-niece, Anne Smythe; a great-great-niece, Samantha Rae Smythe; and three cousins, William (Sherry) Ewers, David (Patty) Ewers and Kenneth Ewers. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Manford and Marjorie Tate; a niece, Barbara Tate; and cousins, Burdette and Betty Ewers, Katherine Tate, Ben Tate and Eugene Tate.Virginia attained her bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Missouri in Columbia. She loved children as well as being an educator and taught for more than 40 years at the EIU Lab School. Virginia valued the importance of family and was a devoted daughter and a caregiver for her mother for many years. Her hobbies included collecting antiques and cut crystal. She enhanced her love for music by playing the piano and many stray cats benefited from her kindness and fondness for them.Funeral ServiceThe funeral service for Virginia Tate was held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 17, 2018 at Adams Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tom Farris officiating. Scripture along with remembrances were shared by Bob and Gina Smythe and Howard Tate. Pianist, Gayle Cox provided the prelude selections, accompanied the congregational hymns of ""Come Thou Fount"" and ""Old Rugged Cross"" and performed a piano solo of ""A Mighty Fortress"". A recording of ""Smoke Gets In Your Eyes"", a favorite of Virginia's was also played. The interment service was at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Crescent Heights Cemetery in Pleasant Hill, Illinois. Pallbearers were Howard Tate, Robert Smythe, William Ewers, David Ewers, Kenneth Ewers and Gina Smythe.
