Verlon Dean Myers' Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Verlon Dean Myers, age 73 of Charleston, passed into the arms of our Lord on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at their winter home at the Continental Country Club in Wildwood, Florida. Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday evening, January 13, 2012 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. with Masonic Services at 8:00 to be conducted by members and guests of the Charleston Masonic Lodge #35 A.F. & A.M. Visitation will also be held Saturday morning from 10:00 until 11:00. Funeral Services honoring and celebrating his life will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning with Reverend Sharon Patton officiating. Military Rites will also be conducted by members of the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592 Honor Guard. Visitation and Services will be held at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. A Private Family Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Graham Chapel Cemetery located east of Allenville, Illinois. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his honor be made to the Old State Road Christian Church or to Friends of St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitations or service, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920. Verlon was born on January 13, 1938 in Metcalf, Illinois a son of the late Harold and Josephine (Boswell) Myers. He is survived by Janet (Whitaker) Myers, his loving and supportive wife of fifty-one years; his four daughters, Kathy (Michael) Bess of Charleston, Gretchen (Dale) Feiste of Parma, Ohio, Deanne (William) Jones of Port St. Lucie, Florida and Robin (Brad) Gabel of Charleston; five grandchildren, Kyle (Emily) Bess, Alyssa and Krista Feiste, Baker and Reilly Jones; a great-grandson, Mason Dean Bess; and a brother, Robert Kent (Gay) Myers. In addition to his parents he was preceded by a daughter, Laura Kay Myers. Verlon was a graduate of Charleston High School and obtained his Masters degree in Education at Eastern Illinois University. He served our country as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps for four years and then began his career as a teacher and football coach. He especially held fond memories of his tenures at Georgetown, Newton and Charleston High School and loved following the careers of his former players. Verlon was inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in November of 1991 after having coached for over 27 years. Verlon was one of the founding members of the Old State Road Disciples of Christ Christian Church in Charleston. He held a strong belief in Jesus Christ our Lord and shared this with his players. Verlon was also a member of the Free Masons, the Moose Club, and greatly enjoyed golfing with his buddies at the Charleston Country Club. His greatest joy in life was his wife and their family. He loved to travel and visit their daughters and families at their respective homes.
