Treva N. Sims' Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Treva Naomi Sims, age 97 of Charleston, departed this earthly dwelling and entered her heavenly home on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at her residence. Services honoring and celebrating her life will be held at Noon on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Adams Funeral Chapel with Reverend Robert Lee officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday morning from 11:00 until Noon at the funeral chapel. Interment will be in the Nebo Cemetery near Union Center in Cumberland County, Illinois. It is requested that memorial gifts in her honor be made to the American Heart Association, the Disabled American Veterans or to a charity of the donor's preference. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or services or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920. Treva was born in Union Township, Cumberland County, Illinois on January 13, 1914 the oldest of three daughters born to the late Owen Cleveland and Cora Elizabeth (Kuhn) Carlen. She married Arlar Earl Sims on November 5, 1932 and they celebrated sixty-one years of marriage prior to Earl's death on May 7, 1994. She is survived by her sisters, Georgia Galloway of rural Greenup and Ruth Tinsman and husband Clifford of Urbana, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Katherine Ryder of Charleston; a brother-in-law, John Sims and wife Anneliese of Decatur, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Gordon Galloway. Treva was employed at the Brown Shoe Company both in Greenup and Charleston. She later used her creative and artistic ability as a designer for Noble Flower Shop and also for a florist in Greenup. She was a long-time member of the Mt. Zion (Nebo) Separate Baptist Church in Cumberland County and was faithful in her Christian witness. Treva taught Sunday School, was an active member of the Ladies Aid and supported the various youth activities - especially helping with the summer camping programs. She was a fifty-plus year member of the Order of Eastern Star sharing this time between Elect Lady Chapter 40 and the former Sopha C Chapter 102, and serving as Worthy Matron a number of times. She enjoyed the fellowship of other seniors at Prime Time which met at Central Christian Church in Charleston and was always working on a craft project - Christmas crafts were her favorite. Treva loved being around people and she was never at a loss for words. She shared a special bond with her nieces and nephews who dearly loved her and with her sisters who so tenderly and lovingly cared for her.
