Stephanie Byrd Shafer's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Stephanie ""Stevie"" Byrd Shafer, age 64 of Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Services honoring and celebrating her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. today (Thursday, August 4, 2011) at Adams Funeral Chapel with Pastor Mike Southards officiating. Visitation will be held today from 11:00 until 1:00 at the funeral chapel. Burial will follow in the Enon Cemetery in Ashmore Township, Illinois. It is requested that memorial gifts in her honor be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or to a charity of the donor's preference. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or services or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920. Stephanie was born in Charleston on January 18, 1947 the daughter of the late Bill and Bernice (Neal) Byrd. She married Larry Shafer on May 20, 1967. She is survived by her son, Douglas W. Shafer of Greenup, Illinois; a brother, Allen Byrd and wife Kathy of Savannah, Georgia; two nephews, Andrew Byrd and wife Carrie of Charleston and Brent Byrd and wife Angela of St. Augustine, Florida; a niece, Kaylee Byrd of Savannah; two great nephews; several aunts and uncles; and two very dear friends, Jennifer Black and Mary Brazzell, both of Charleston. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by two sons, Ryan Shafer and Jeffrey Shafer. Stephanie was a member of First Christian Church in Charleston, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Toledo American Legion Post #764. She was affectionately known to her family and many friends as ""Stevie"". She was a homemaker who enjoyed the comforts of home but also enjoyed socializing with her friends. She was computer savvy and spent many hours keeping her skills sharp and up-to-date. Another of her favorite pastimes was watching current and non-fictional movies. She learned to live with the challenges of having Muscular Dystrophy and faced each day with courage and determination. She loved her family dearly, especially her son Doug. She will be remembered with fond affection by her family and dear friends.
