Shirley J. Sloan's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Shirley Jean Sloan, age 75 of Charleston, passed away at her home on Monday, June 1, 2015. Visitation for family and friends will be held this evening, Wednesday, June 3, 2015 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Funeral Services honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at the funeral chapel. Burial will follow in the Arcola Township Cemetery, Arcola, IL. It is requested that thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the American Heart Association. Gifts may be left during the visitation or service or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Shirley was born on August 9, 1939 in Oakland, IL, a daughter of the late Joseph and Evelyn (Swick) Sloan. She is survived by her sister, Linda Anderson and husband Don of Eureka, IL, 4 nieces and their families, Jennifer (Seth) Aikens and Jamie Anderson, all of Phoenix, AZ, Sharon Eversole of Colorado and Brenda Eversole of Maine; and a nephew, Brian Sloan of Albuquerque, NM. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Kay Ostermiller; a brother, Kenneth Sloan; and a nephew, David Eversole. Shirley was a graduate of Oakland High School. She was employed at the Charleston Shoe Factory for 30 years before accepting a position with the Charleston School District as a custodian for the Charleston High School, a position she held for 23 years. Shirley attended Salisbury Church and was actively involved as a member of the Women of the Moose, Charleston Chapter #1175. Shirley was happiest when helping others. She volunteered with many organizations such as Special Olympics, the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association, and she could always be relied upon to come to the aid of a friend or coworker in need. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens, canning garden produce and she was an excellent baker - her sugar cookies were scrumptious. When speaking of Shirley, descriptive words such as kind, helpful, generous and gracious were often used. Shirley was blessed with a wealth of friends - both young and old. They along with her family will truly miss her smile and her friendly attitude toward others.
