Shirley Jean Hawk's Obituary
LERNA, IL - Shirley Jean Hawk, age 72 of rural Lerna, IL, passed away at her home on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Her family will host a time for friends and family to remember and celebrate her life on Saturday, January 30, 2016 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. There will be no formal services and her body will be cremated according to her wishes. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the American Cancer Society. Gifts may be left during the time of remembering, or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Shirley was born December 7, 1943 in Milwaukee, WI to the late John William and Clarice Belle (Carpenter) Robson. She became the wife of George Thomas Hawk, Jr. on May 8, 1981in Belleville, IL. She is survived by Tom, her loving and devoted husband of 34 years; her stepchildren, Scott Hawk of Farmington, MO, Tamora Mertz and husband Chuck of Lompoc, CA, Ross Hawk and wife Joanne of Batavia, IL; 10 step-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandchildren; her brother Jerry Robson and his wife Cindy of Gary, IN and their family. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Artie Ditsler and a brother, David Robson. Shirley grew up in Warren, IL and graduated from Warren High School. She began her employment with State Farm Insurance Company as a secretary and retired as a field adjustor. Following formal retirement from State Farm, she managed Pleasant Grove Golf Course (now known as Bent Tree) located south of Charleston. Her love for the game of golf made her well suited for this position. Shirley so enjoyed the sport of bowling as well and bowled on an afternoon women's league for a number of years. As a result of her love for golf and bowling, she carried memberships in both the United States and Women's Golf Associations as well as the Charleston Women's Bowling Association and the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). Shirley enjoyed country living and it allowed her to better care for the variety of animals she loved. She was most fond of her many cats who she knew by name, and her beloved miniature schnauzer, Kirby. Shirley's attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills complemented Tom's relaxed and carefree attitude - they made the perfect pair. Her love for her family was felt through her special personal touches that accompanied every birthday, anniversary or family occasion. Shirley will be dearly missed but will always be lovingly remembered by her friends and family.Click to view Shirley's memorial video.
