Shirley M. Bailey's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Shirley Mae Johnson Bailey, age 90 of Charleston, passed away Friday night, March 17, 2017 at her Life's Journey residence in Mattoon. A Memorial Service honoring and celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 902 Cleveland Avenue in Charleston with Pastor Ken Hoover officiating. It is requested that thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Gifts may be mailed to the church or to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Shirley was born August 23, 1926 in Warren, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Edolph L. and Lois (Woodard) Johnson. She married Ross Owen Bailey on June 11, 1950 and they resided in Corry, PA for 27 years before relocating to Charleston, IL in 1977. They shared 49 wonderful years of marriage prior to his death on October 14, 1999. She is survived by her four children; Craig D. Bailey (Norval Copeland) of Philadelphia, PA, Kay E. (Gary) Taylor of New Wilmington, PA, twins, James E. (Marla Poggenpohl Ingram) Bailey of Champaign, IL and Pamela S. (S. John) Horner of Montgomery, NY; eight grandchildren, including Lori Taylor (Mark Miller), Kevin (Jessica Moose) Taylor, Brian (Jillian Meyer) Taylor, Taylor Bailey, Morgan Bailey, John "Jak" (Erin Mercurio) Horner and Anne Horner; five great-grandchildren, Cameron Magnano Taylor, Dahlia Mae Miller, Brooks Owen Taylor and twins John Isaac and Michelle Katharine Bailey. In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by an infant brother William Paul Johnson. Shirley was a graduate of Youngsville High School in Youngsville, PA, Jamestown Business College and the Warren Conservatory of Music in Warren, PA where she studied piano. Before becoming a mother and devoting her time to her children, she worked as a bookkeeper for Chautauqua County in Mayville, NY. She was also a member of PEO International and Immanuel Lutheran Church. Shirley loved to travel with Ross and cherished the times they spent together. She also enjoyed bridge, golfing, crafts and most importantly spending time with her family and friends.
