Sally L. Smith's Obituary
Sally L. Smith, age 96, of Charleston, IL (formerly of Ashmore, IL) passed away peacefully in her sleep at 5:30 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Mattoon Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. She was born December 3, 1927, in Ashmore, IL, the daughter of Willis Boyer Sr. and Lorraine (Shoot) Boyer. She married Joe W. Smith in Charleston, IL, on November 30, 1947; he passed away on April 10, 2017.
Survivors include her daughters, Debbie Porter (Tom) and Melinda Smith, all of Charleston, IL; grandchildren, Todd Porter (Jenny), Derek Porter, Ashley Temple (Tim), all of Charleston, IL; great-grandchildren, Delaney Poorman (John) of Humboldt, IL, Garrett Porter of Bloomington, IL, and Emma Porter, Addyson Porter, Hunter Bell, Gavin Porter, Rayce Bell, and Carson Cline, all of Charleston, IL; great-great-grandchild, Larson Poorman of Humboldt, IL; and several nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe W. Smith, and brothers, Willis Boyer, Jr., and Lewis Boyer.
Sally was a 1946 graduate of Charleston High School. She married the love of her life and kept very busy running the household and tending to her daughters' needs. She also later worked in the administration office at the Coles County Sheriff's office in Charleston, IL.
Sally was a faithful member of East Harrison Street Church of God. She was a member of the Moose Lodge #1175 and Elks Lodge #623 of Charleston, IL. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau and served as President of the Coles County Republican Women's Club.
Sally enjoyed homemaking, traveling with her husband, being actively involved in church activities, and camping. She truly cherished her family and any time spent with them.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Mound Cemetery in Charleston, IL, with Pastor Chris Walters officiating.
