S. Dorie Nelson's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Selma Delores Nelson, age 89, of Charleston, IL and formerly of Kane, PA, entered her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 while at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 902 Cleveland Avenue in Charleston. The Memorial Service, honoring and celebrating her life, will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church with Pastor Ken Hoover officiating. Her final resting place will be in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Kane, PA where inurnment and committal services will be held at a later date. It is requested that thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the American Cancer Society. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or services, or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Dorie, as she was affectionately known, was born October 23, 1927 in Kane, PA and was the daughter of the late Melvin and Hazel (Ross) Benson. She married Peter W. Nelson on January 10, 1947 and they shared 38 years of marriage prior to his death on January 18, 1985. Those left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Brenda Good and her husband Dr. Robert Good of Charleston; 9 granddaughters, Jessica Martinez of Belton, TX, Leslie Ott of Westmont, IL, Kara Painton of Charleston, IL, Terrie Antosh of Monument, CO, Christy Garrison of Colorado Springs, CO, Jennifer McGuffin of Nashville, TN, Heather Bunting of Lakeland, FL, Amanda Good of Clayton, NC and Kellie Cooper of Forest, VA; 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marian Fitzella and Rheta Tilberg, both of Kane; a brother, Ray Benson; and nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two children Peter Nelson III and Babette Smith; and a great-grandson. Since locating to Charleston to be near family, Dorie has been a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was actively involved in the Ladies Aid. She so enjoyed being a part of Immanuel's church family and shared a special bond with those in the Young At Heart fellowship group. She was talented at needlework, such as knitting and crocheting, and was well known for her afghan creations. It is estimated that she has created and gifted more than 100 afghans which have provided warmth and comfort to family and friends, those in Veterans hospitals, and recipients of not-for-profit organizations. Dorie was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed sharing special times with her family and cherished the quality time spent with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family and friends will always treasure their many wonderful memories.
