Roy A. Porter's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Roy A. Porter, age 83 of Charleston, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 14, 2011 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. In accordance with his wishes his earthly body will be cremated. A visitation for family and friends will be held Friday evening, August 19, 2011 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Memorial Services in honor and celebration of his life will be hosted by his church family at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the First Church of God, 1225 Montgomery Drive in Charleston with Reverend Walt Truex officiating. It is requested that memorial gifts in his honor be made to the First Church of God in Charleston. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the Visitation, at the Memorial Services or mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920. Roy was born in Hindsboro, Illinois on December 7, 1927, a son of the late Thomas and Helen (Clapp) Porter. He married Merna Hurst on November 13, 1948 in Hemlock, Indiana and they have lovingly shared sixty-two years of marriage and friendship. In addition to Merna he is survived by his children, Tom Porter and wife Debbie, Diane Ingle and husband John and Steve Porter and wife Sandy, all of Charleston; five grandchildren, Todd Porter and wife Jenny, Derek Porter and wife Brandi and Ashley Porter, all of Charleston, Amy Diener and husband Glen of Humboldt, Illinois and Kevin Ingle and wife Amanda of Valrico, Florida; eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Jane Ingram of Arthur, Illinois; a brother, Don Porter and wife Dianne of Mattoon, Illinois; several nieces and nephews; and special dear family friends, Larry and Sharon Maguire of Mattoon. In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded by three brothers, Tom Porter, Percy Porter and Walter Porter; and a sister, Josephine Stephen. Roy was an Army Veteran who honorably served his country during World War II. For more than nineteen years he was employed with Moore Business Forms, retiring in 1990. The next twenty years were devoted to assisting with the family-owned business, Porter Auto Body. Roy was a faithful and devoted member of the First Church of God in Charleston and a Life Member of the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592. Roy was content with life. He was happy when at home with Merna, watching television or being at work, meeting and greeting all who entered the Porter Auto Body doors. He was always a gentleman and treated others with respect and politeness. He was a good provider for his family and a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His presence will be truly missed but loving memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
