Ronald D. Amyx's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Ronald D. Amyx, age 67, entered his heavenly home on Thursday, October 17, 2013 while at his Charleston residence. Visitation for family and friends will be held Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Funeral Services honoring and celebrating his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 21, 2013 at the funeral chapel with Pastor Curt Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. It is requested that thoughtful donations in his honor be made to East Harrison Street Church of God. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Ron was born on July 23, 1946 in Charleston to the late Harry and Betty (Decker) Amyx. He married Z. Kay Fudge on May 28, 1967 in Charleston and they have celebrated 46 years of marriage and friendship. In addition to Kay he is survived by three daughters, Darcy Obar and husband Chuck of Florence, AZ, Melissa Drozd and husband Jason of Peoria, IL and Sara Halihan and husband Sean of Bloomington, IL; five grandchildren, Josh Amyx of Reno, NV, Ethan Amyx of Florence, and Audrey, Henry and Simon Drozd, all of Peoria; two step-grandchildren, Sarah and Sam Halihan, both of Washington, IL; a great-granddaughter, Rayne Amyx of Reno; a sister, Sue Amyx of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; several nieces and nephews; and a cousin, Carol Kauffman. In addition to his parents Ron was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Amyx. Ron grew up in Sullivan, Illinois and was a 1964 graduate of Sullivan High School. He furthered his education by attending both Lake Land College and Eastern Illinois University. From 1972 until his retirement in 2001, Ron was employed as a Broadcast Engineer at Eastern Illinois University for WEIU Television and Radio. He was a faithful member of East Harrison Street Church of God where he enjoyed serving as drummer for the Praise Band and was a former church deacon.Ron was an Eagle Scout and led and nurtured other young scouts as their Scout Master. He was a past Coles County Fair Board President and previously served as a dispatcher for the Coles County Emergency and Disaster Agency (ESDA) and served on the Illinois Medical Emergency Response Team (IMERT). Ron was also a member of the Charleston Moose Lodge #1388; a proud NRA card carrier and a Ham Radio operator. Ron began drumming at the young age of 5 and through the years played for various local bands - it was a hobby he truly enjoyed. He also enjoyed shooting as well as boating and camping with his family, and had mastered the art of dutch oven cooking over a campfire. Ron loved his family dearly and they were his priority as a devoted husband and father and a proud and doting grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a faithful friend to many including his canine companion, Ruby. Ron's quiet and unassuming nature made is easy and comfortable to be in his presence, and the lives of those who knew and loved him, have been enriched and enhanced through their relationship with him. He will forever be fondly remembered.
