Robert was born January 17, 1914 northeast of Charleston in Morgan Township, one of 12 children born to the late Andrew and Gladys (Daugherty) Lanman. Bob attended Rardin High School, which was at that time a 3 year high school. In order to attain a high school diploma, Bob rode his horse to and from Westfield, IL where he completed his senior year, graduating from Westfield High School in 1932. In 1941, Bob was inducted into the United States Army and served 4 years in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during WWII. Before being honorably discharged in May of 1945, Bob received a Silver Star, the third highest military decoration awarded for valor. A year later, on June, 29, 1946, he married the love of his life, Dorothy L. Stone, and they have shared an endearing marriage and friendship for nearly 70 years. In addition to Dorothy, Bob leaves the daughter they raised, Brenda Holmes of Springfield, IL and her fiancé Chuck Hartke; a granddaughter, Molly B. Holmes of Huntley, IL; a great-grandson, Hank Vanderholm; two sisters, Neva Cutri and Imogene McClanahan; a sister-in-law, Wilma Lanman; and numerous devoted nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by 9 of his siblings, Opal Chesser, Marguerite Hamilton, Vivian Cook, Lucille Porter, Harold "Pork" Lanman, Charles Leroy Lanman, Andrew Lanman, Jr., Paul Lanman and James Lanman. In 1946, Bob along with his brother Harold, began operating a gas station located at the corner of Fifth and Madison Streets. He later became a bulk agent for Standard Oil Company in 1948, a position he held for the next 30 years, and completed his career with the family business, Lanman Oil Company. Bob has been a life-long resident of the Charleston Community, a life member of the Charleston VFW, and in 2012 was awarded the 75 year Master Mason pin as a member of Ashmore Masonic Lodge. Bob was a faithful longtime member of First Baptist Church in Charleston, and Christian principles such as loving kindness, generosity, honesty and integrity were values that Bob adhered to. Bob's work ethic was also to be admired. He loved to garden and could often be found tending his vegetable garden on the family farm as he looked forward to sharing the fruits of his labor with others. He enjoyed working in the yard and in the summer his lawn was always well manicured. Bob was also an avid fan of St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He was a good friend to many, sharing his sense of humor with others on many occasions and always ready and willing to give a hug as well as receive one. Bob Lanman was held in high regard and was well deserving of the respect and admiration of all who knew him. He was a true gentleman and will always be remembered for the polite and considerate ways in which he treated others, the sparkle in his eyes when he smiled, and the multitude of wonderful loving memories he leaves.
