Richard D. ""Rick"" Welborn's Obituary
ASHMORE, IL - Richard David "Rick" Welborn, age 62 of Ashmore and formerly of Tuscola, Illinois passed away on Friday, March 7, 2014 while at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. The Funeral Service honoring and celebrating his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston with Pastor Lanny Faulkner officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashmore Cemetery in Ashmore, Illinois. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at the funeral home with Masonic Services to be conducted at 7:30 by members and guests of Charleston Masonic Lodge #35 A.F. & A.M. It is requested that in lieu of flowers thoughtful donations in his honor be made to the Corn Belt Shrine Club. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Rick was born on September 14, 1951 in Pampa, Texas to the late Pete and Eloise (Simmons) Welborn. He married Cathy (Weaver) VanLanot in June of 1980. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Cathy of Ashmore; two daughters, Crystal Romack and husband Jeremy and Carie Nay and husband Jason, all of Ashmore; 7 grandchilren, Denise Walters, Daniel Walters, Wyatt Walters and special friend Keli, Bentley Gough, Kameron Romack, Kahli Romack and Jenson Nay; three sisters, Charlotte Kleiss and husband Bill of Tuscola, Jeryl Ploeger and husband Jim of Mahomet, Illinois, Sylvia Mize and husband Mark of Urbana; a brother, Mike Welborn and wife Cassie of Orlando, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews; and his 3 truly spoiled canine pals, Baxter, Casper and Bella. In addition to his parents he was preceded by a sister, Cathy Montaya. Rick was a valued employee of R.R. Donnelley & Sons for 25 years prior to retiring this past year. He was a member of the Charleston Masonic Lodge #35 A.F. & A.M., the Mattoon American Legion Post 88 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 3438 of Mattoon. One of Rick's favorite past-times was playing golf. He was a former member of the Charleston Country Club where he shot a hole-in-one and a former member of the Kaskaskia Country Club. He was currently a member of both the Bent Tree and Meadowview Golf Courses. In addition to golfing, Rick enjoyed bowling and was in general a sports fan with a special liking for the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs as well as being a huge Illini Fan. He was also a great cook and was extremely family oriented. He looked forward to family get-togethers, swim parties and any opportunity to spoil his grandchildren whom he dearly loved. The younger ones were given a loving nickname of their own and he was affectionately known to all of his grandchildren as "Poppi" . Rick will be missed but his memory will forever be cherished by his loving family and many devoted friends.
