Richard E. Dennis' Obituary
MATTOON, IL - Richard E. Dennis, age 68 of Mattoon and formerly of Charleston, went to be with his Lord on Friday, May 1, 2015 while at Mattoon Health Care. Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, May 6, 2015 from Noon until 1:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Funeral Services honoring and celebrating his life will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral chapel with Pastor Chuck Trent officiating. Burial will follow in the Kickapoo Cemetery located south of Charleston. It is requested that thoughtful donations in his honor be made to the Otterbein United Methodist Church. Gifts may be left during the visitation or service or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Richard was born on March 3, 1947 in Charleston, IL, a son of the late Luther and Audry (Bennett) Dennis. He married Paula Stoner on June 26, 1976 in Charleston. In addition to his loving wife Paula of Mattoon, Richard is survived by two cousins, Steve Dennis of Oakland, IL and Billy Dennis of Topeka, Kansas. Richard was preceded in death by 4 brothers and an uncle, Harold Dennis. For many years Richard was a custodian for the Charleston Community Unit 1 School District. He was a faithful member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Charleston and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians. Richard became an ordained minister in 1985. As a minister he served the congregation of the Southern Baptist Church in Strasburg, IL. He was passionate about his love for the Lord and his ministry in leading others to experience a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He found that through his talents as a magician he could reach out to many by sharing the Gospel through magic. Richard often enjoyed relaxing with fishing pole in hand. He was a good friend to many and he was always available to lend a hand whenever needed. He also possessed a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed teasing those around him - bringing joy to others and creating smiles was important to him. During his physical challenges, Richard was always in good spirits and maintained a positive attitude while remaining strong, steadfast and determined not to give up. He was a wonderful husband and he and Paula were blessed with 38 years of marriage, a loving friendship and a shared ministry.
