Paul G. Hargis' Obituary
TOLEDO, IL - Paul Gordon Hargis, age 86 of Toledo, Illinois and formerly of Charleston, was in the comfort of his home when he went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 17, 2018. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston with Masonic Services at 6:45 p.m. conducted by members and guests of Ashmore Masonic Lodge #390. The Funeral Service honoring and celebrating his life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018 at the funeral chapel with Pastor Bill Cox officiating. Burial, with military rites, conducted by the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592 and Charleston American Legion Post 93 combined honor guard will follow in Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston. It is requested that donations in his honor be made to Carle Hospice, East Harrison Street Church of God or Toledo Christian Church. Gifts may be left at the visitation or service or mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.Paul was born November 17, 1931 in Charleston, Illinois, a son of the late Silas and Mary Ann (Stevens) Hargis. He married Gloria Morgan on May 28, 1955 in Mattoon, Illinois and they recently celebrated sixty-three years of marriage. He is also survived by their three children, Paul L. Hargis and wife Elaine of Humboldt, Illinois, Penny S. (Hargis) Black and husband Michael of Toledo, Illinois and John D. Hargis and wife Sheryl of Charleston; five grandchildren, Travis Hargis, Christina (Chad) Zike, Amanda Black, Hank (Rebecca) Hargis and Amie (Caleb) Shaffer; six great-grandchildren, Addison and Aden Zike, Alexis and Ashlynn Black, Audie Shaffer and Charlotte Hargis; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hargis of Charleston and Jeanne Martin of Mattoon; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Antha Brewer and Ileene Ealy; and three brothers, Willford, Jack, and Victor Hargis.Paul was a United States Army Veteran who honorably served during the Korean War. He was a heavy equipment operator working mostly for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 841 but also at Humphrey's Stone Quarry and Illinois Department of Transportation. He was a member of Ashmore Masonic Lodge #390 A.F. & A.M. and a long time member of East Harrison Street Church of God. After moving to Toledo, Paul became a member of the Toledo Christian Church family.As a husband, father, and grandfather, Paul was supportive of his family and made them his priority. Several memorable family vacations can be recalled with Florida being a favorite destination, and weekends boating on the lake with special friends. Paul always looked forward to the enjoyment of being outdoors and able to enjoy his favorite hobbies such as hunting and fishing, mushrooming or searching for ginseng. Click for Family Memorial Video.Funeral ServiceThe funeral service for Paul Hargis was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018 with Pastor Bill Cox officiating. Grandson Hank Hargis, vocalist and guitarist, sang ""The Old Rugged Cross"" for the service and ""What A Day That Will Be"" at the interment service. Vocalist Jay Simpson, accompanied by pianist Janet Ruddell sang ""His Eye Is On The Sparrow"" and ""How Great Thou Art"". Burial followed in Roselawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Chad Zike, Caleb Shaffer, Hank Hargis, Roc Hargis, Victor Hargis, John Brewer and Amanda Black. Honorary Pallbearer was Travis Hargis. Military Rites at the cemetery were conducted by the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592 and Charleston American Legion Post 93 combined honor guard. Participating were: Phil Kerz, Detail Commander; Dale Downs, Chaplain; John Gelb and Darrell Nees, Color Guard; Mike Zimmerle, Color Bearer; Chet Campbell, Bugler; and Max Carpetner, Gary Grounds, Chris Prater, Dave Finley and Eugene Winnett, Riflemen. Flag Detail, provided by the Illinois Army National Guard Military Funeral Detail in Decatur, Illinois included CPL Carman and PFC Woolard.Masonic Services were conducted at 6:45 p.m. at the close of visitation Thursday evening by members and guests of Ashmore Masonic Lodge #390 A.F. & A.M.
