Norma J. Hanner-Smith's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Norma Jean Hanner-Smith, age 80 of Charleston, entered her Heavenly Home on Saturday, January 11, 2014 while at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon. Her family and church family will host a Memorial Service in honor and celebration of her life at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Friendship Baptist Church located at 18709 Harrison Street Road, with Pastor Tom Skinner and Pastor Fred Harner officiating. Her cremated remains will be inurned next to her husband at the Embarrass Cemetery in Edgar County, Illinois at a later date. It is requested that thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the Friendship Baptist Church. Gifts may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Norma was born on March 22, 1933 in Ashmore, Illinois, one of eleven children born to the late Frank and Dorothy (Ogle) Butler. She married Dale Hanner on August 10, 1950 and he preceded her in death on January 31, 1984. She is survived by her six children, Terry Hanner and wife Becky of Charleston, Brenda Reardon and husband Bill of Austin, TX, Marilyn Ferguson of Charleston, Nancy Nees and husband Dale of Charleston, Gary Hanner and wife Linda of Effingham, Illinois and Larry ""Pud"" Hanner and wife Jeri of Charleston; 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; four brothers, Frank Butler of Rardin, Jim (Karen) Butler of Ashmore, Richard (Katrina) Butler of Mattoon, Danny (Susie) Butler of Mattoon; three sisters, Shirley (Fred) Harner of Mattoon, Karen (Tom) Moore of Bay Minette, AL, Phyllis (Steve) Ellis of King City, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three brothers, Larry Butler, Robert Butler and Ron Butler. Norma was employed by the Charleston School District for many years as a librarian at the Charleston Middle School and at the Administration Office as secretary to the Superintendent of Schools. She was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church and formerly held membership with the Charleston VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Women of the Moose and Women of the Elks. Norma was an avid Bingo player and had a circle of friends whom she enjoyed playing with. As a resident of Heritage Woods of Charleston, she was actively involved with their programs and fund raising activities. Norma loved her family and was proud of her children and their families. Her loved ones will treasure their many fond memories of special times shared.
