Myra Maxine Clayton's Obituary
Myra Maxine Clayton, age 91, of Charleston, IL, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Willow Breeze Hospice House in Mattoon, IL. She was born on July 22, 1933, in Paris, IL, to Forrest and Cleo (Bledsoe) Walls. On February 21, 1953, she married Nolan Wilbur “Sonny” Clayton in Charleston, IL. He preceded her in death on June 23, 1981.
Maxine is survived by her three sons: Michael (Gail) Clayton of Charleston, IL, Scott (Jill) Clayton of Tuttle, OK, and Christopher Clayton of Charleston, IL; and three grandchildren: Jason Clayton, Andrew Clayton, and Alexandra Clayton. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Melissa Clayton.
Maxine graduated from Eastern Illinois State High School (1951) and went on to attend Eastern Illinois University. She was a dedicated employee of Eastern Illinois University for over 40 years and was honored with the Livingston C. Lord Service Award in recognition of her outstanding and longstanding service to the university.
Maxine was a member of numerous clubs and organizations including: Eastern Star, Charleston Home Extension, Book Club, “Lunch Bunch”. She loved crafting, painting, traveling, and playing cards with her friends. She was also a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan.
A woman of deep faith, Maxine was a devoted member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m., with Janice Kahl officiating. Private burial will take place at Mound Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Villas of Holly Brook Assisted Living and Memory Care, 738 18th St., Charleston, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the WUMC Music Fund, 2206 4th St., Charleston, IL 61920.
