Mildred was born October 22, 1929 in Danville, IL the only daughter of the late Albert and Madge (Cramer) Schramm. She married Harrison Read, Jr. on August 5, 1950 and they shared 61 years of marriage prior to his death on April 3, 2012. Mildred is survived by a daughter, Melanie Ann Adams and her soul mate, Darren Clark of Gahanna, Ohio; a brother, Fred Schramm and his wife "Brownie" of Washington, IL; several nieces and nephews and their families; and the Erdmann family who were not only dear neighbors but extended family. In addition to her parents and husband, Mildred was also preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Floyd Schramm. Mildred attained her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Eastern Illinois University and was a Language Arts and Social Studies teacher in the Charleston School District for 35 years. For many years Harry and Mildred were the proud owners of racing horses and it was obvious by her attendance at all the races that she thoroughly enjoyed harness racing and it was an important aspect of her life. Mildred loved being outdoors and her flower gardens were always meticulously cared for with not a weed in sight. She was an amazingly talented woman - with paint brush in hand she could turn a blank canvas into a beautiful work of art, and with needles, yarn, thread and material she could produce wonderfully sewn, tatted, crocheted or knitted items. Mildred was also an avid reader, enjoyed a good crossword or jigsaw puzzle, and was kind and loving to animals, with extra special care reserved for her cat, Hank. Mildred touched the lives of many as a wife, mother, sister, teacher and friend and may she always be remembered for the goodness and kindness shown to others. Click to view Mildred's memorial video.
