Mike & Gail Clayton's Obituary
Mary Gail Clayton, age 66, and her husband, Michael G. Clayton, age 71, both of Charleston, Illinois, passed away together on Friday, October 24, 2025, in a tragic car accident near Westfield, Illinois.
Gail was born on January 7, 1959, in Charleston, the daughter of John and Lavona (Gray) Gilbert. Mike was born on March 31, 1954, in Charleston, the son of Nolan and Myra (Walls) Clayton. They were united in marriage on May 15, 1982, and through their years together they built a home filled with laughter, love, and deep devotion to their family and community.
They are survived by their loving family: siblings Susie (Terry) Holton of Hindsboro, Scott (Jill) Clayton of Tuttle, Oklahoma, and Chris Clayton of Charleston; nieces and nephews Jason Clayton, Andrew Clayton, Alexandra Clayton, Diana Schrock, and Jonathan “JD” Holton; and great-nieces and great-nephews who were like grandchildren to them, Kasen Schrock, Bristol Schrock, and Brentley Holton.
They were preceded in death by their parents and their beloved daughter, Melissa Clayton, who passed away at the age of 18. The strength and love they showed in the years that followed were a true reflection of their character and devotion to one another.
Both Mike and Gail were proud graduates of Charleston High School. After graduation, Mike earned his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University, where he went on to dedicate many years to the athletic department as a manager before retiring. Together, Mike and Gail managed the Panther Paw Bar and Grill for thirteen years, creating a place where friends and neighbors always felt at home. Mike was also serving as a District 2 Coles County Board Member, continuing his lifelong commitment to his community.
Gail was known for her dedication, warmth, and strong work ethic. Before managing the Panther Paw with Mike, she spent several years working in the vocational department at CCAR Industries. She later worked in food service at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center and Charleston Middle School. Whether through her work, her friendships, or the garden she lovingly tended, Gail had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome.
Mike and Gail were a team in every sense. Together, they lived their lives with strong values, unwavering love for family, and a deep dedication to their hometown. They believed in supporting the Charleston community and keeping their business local whenever possible. Whether it was groceries, gifts, or meals, they always chose local shops and markets, proudly supporting small businesses and encouraging others to do the same. They were familiar faces at the Charleston Farmer’s Market, always taking time to visit with neighbors and friends.
Both were active members of Elks Lodge #623, where they enjoyed countless friendships over the years. Gail was also active in the Women of the Moose #1388 and the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 1592. Mike, an avid outdoorsman, loved hunting and spending time in nature, while Gail found joy in gardening and caring for her flowers. They loved the simple things: family dinners, community gatherings, and quiet evenings together at home.
Their lives were a testament to hard work, kindness, and love for each other, for their family, and for the place they called home. They will be deeply missed by all who knew them.
A joint visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive in Charleston. A joint funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 31, 2025, at Adams Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Brad Shumaker officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston.
