Max T. Cooper's Obituary
SAN ANTONIO, TX - Max T. Cooper, age 84 of San Antonio, TX and formerly of the Charleston and Ashmore area, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Christus Hospice Center in San Antonio. Visitation for family and friends will be held Saturday, May 28, 2016 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Funeral Services honoring and celebrating his life will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral chapel with Reverend Dr. Bob Swickard officiating and Masonic Services to be conducted by members and guests of Ashmore Masonic Lodge #390 A.F. & A.M. Burial with military rites conducted by the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592 and the Charleston American Legion Post 93 combined honor guards will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. It is requested that thoughtful donations in his honor be made to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation. Gifts may be left during the visitation or service or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Max was born February 5, 1932 in Murphysboro, IL to the late Albert and Minerva (Conley) Cooper. He married Mary Drake on June 21, 1952 in Charleston and they were anticipating the celebration of their 64th wedding anniversary next month. In addition to Mary, he is survived by a daughter, Marcie Smith and husband Roscoe "Bart" Smith, III of San Antonio; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Cooper of Charleston; six grandchildren, Amanda (Eric) Durbin, Tara (Shawn) Misner, Megan (Gabriel) Martin, Andrew Cooper, Kimberly Cooper and Clayton Cooper; 11 great- grandchildren; and a sister Delores Cooper of Charleston. He was preceded by an infant brother and a son, Mark Cooper. Max was a graduate of Charleston High School and furthered his education at Sparks Business College in Shelbyville. He was a U.S. Army Veteran who honorably served his country during the Korean War. He was employed at the Charleston National Bank, Ashmore State Bank, was owner of his own real estate office in Ashmore and was an insurance agent and co-owner of Hassler Cooper Insurance. Max was a long time member of the Ashmore United Presbyterian Church, the Ashmore Masonic Lodge #390 A.F. & A.M. where he earned the title of Honorary Master Mason, and was active with the Charleston Moose Lodge #1388 and the Charleston Jaycees. He loved the Ashmore Community and volunteered to help with various community projects. He was extremely honored when he and Mary were named Grand Marshalls for the Ashmore Days Parade. Max was a people person with a brilliant sense of humor - it was always enjoyable to be in his presence. He loved watching sports and especially followed St. Louis Cardinals baseball, Chicago Bears football and Illini basketball games. Max was truly a family man, always considering the needs of his family to be a priority in his life. He was steadfast in his unconditional love and devotion for Mary, his children and grandchildren, and extended family.
