Maurice L. Johnson's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Maurice L. Johnson, age 78 of Charleston, passed away at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center on Saturday April 22, 2017. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Services honoring and celebrating his life will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017 with Pastor Brian Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Enon Cemetery, rural Ashmore, Illinois. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, thoughtful donations in his honor be made to the Carpenter's Table Food Bank. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or services or mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Maurice was born June 5, 1938 in Westfield, Illinois, a son of the late Leland and Darleene (Garver) Johnson. He married his high school sweetheart, Sandra K. Lang on September 6, 1959 in Westfield. Maurice is survived by Sandra, his loving and devoted wife of nearly 58 years; two sons, Terry Johnson and wife Jana of Charleston and Brett Johnson and wife Jennifer of Champaign, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Brittany (Will) Aitken of Mattoon, Illinois, Savannah Johnson of Herrin, Illinois, Blake (Whitney) Johnson of Mt. Zion, Illinois, Olivia Johnson, Luz Johnson, Sofia Johnson and Jose Johnson, all of Champaign; four great-grandchildren, Lola Johnson, Vera Aitken, Ava Johnson and Ella Johnson; two sisters, Sharon Davis of Charleston and Myla (Ken) Laechelt of the Chicago area; two brothers, Dick (Carol) Johnson of Charleston and Steve (Susie) Johnson of Westfield; a sister-in-law, Sandy Johnson of Charleston; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to his parents, Maurice was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Johnson. Maurice was a 1956 graduate of Westfield High School and a longtime member of the Westfield Baptist Church where he and Sandra were married. Maurice helped to maintain law and order as a Charleston Police Officer and was Police Chief for 14 of the 23 years he served on the force. He was a man of the upmost integrity which earned him the respect of his fellow officers as well as the community he served. Maurice enjoyed listening to music, especially the old country favorites and had a love for anything on wheels that would travel down the highway. He was always on the lookout for his next vehicle, motor home or motorcycle. His hobbies of traveling and camping always included his family which he so dearly loved. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. Maurice will be remembered for his kindness and thoughtfulness and for always being a gentleman who would go out of his way to help someone in need. Click to view Family Memorial Video.
