Mary was born November 7, 1927 in Cumberland County, lllinois, one of 11 children born to Clifford and Edna (Donley) Carr. She married Harold Moss on August 30, 1969 and he has been the great love of her life each and every day for the past 47 years. In addition to Harold, she is survived by four sons; Michael Emerick (Sandy) of Rantoul, Illinois, Donald Emerick (Blanche) of Middleton, Wisconsin, William Emerick (Carma) of West Lafayette, Indiana and John Emerick (Linda) of Santa Barbara, California; two stepdaughters, Peggy Moss of Keokuk, Iowa, Sharon Moss of St. Louis, Missouri; and one stepson, Dennis Moss of Ft. Collins, Colorado. She has been a beloved grandma and great-grandma to 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Susie Callahan and Nellie Markwell as well as a brother, Don Carr (Ethel), all of Greenup, Illinois. One son, Clifford (Penny) Emerick of Valrico, Florida, an infant daughter and 7 of her siblings preceded her in death. Mary Ellen's unabashed faith in her Lord, her matter of fact work ethic, her concern and care for others and her love of family were established in rural Timothy and Greenup, Illinois. They stayed with her when she traveled, in whatever she undertook and with whomever she met. She and Harold have spent their winters in Mesa for nearly thirty years but home was always rural Charleston. With Harold at her side, she made it to 49 of the 50 states and also meandered across Europe with heartfelt enthusiasm. She was an avid reader, a dedicated mahjong player, and a lifelong Chicago Cubs and ardent Illini basketball fan. She will be missed by her family and her many friends and acquaintances in Illinois and Mesa. Mary Ellen will never be forgotten and will always be lovingly remembered by her family.Click to view Family Memorial Video.
