Mary Alice Hackett's Obituary
KANSAS, IL - Mary Alice "Marty" Hackett, age 71 of Kansas, Illinois, passed away peacefully at her home in the comforting presence of her loving family on Tuesday, November 28, 2017. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston with a Rosary Service to be conducted at the close of visitation. The Funeral Mass honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 1, 2017 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 921 Madison Avenue in Charleston with Father Hyland Smith officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery located east of Kansas. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the Mary Hackett Memorial Unbound Fund or Friends of Carle Hospice. Gifts may be left at the Visitation or Funeral Mass or mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.Mary was born May 20, 1946 in Terre Haute, Indiana, the daughter of the late Howard and Bertha E. (Steppe) Egan. She married Robert M. Hackett on May 29, 1969 in Imperial, Missouri and they have shared 48 years of marriage. In addition to her loving husband Bob, left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Katie N. Hackett and companion Charles of Terre Haute and Elizabeth Ealy and husband Jim of Charleston; two grandchildren, Dylan and Lauren Ealy; two brothers, John Egan and wife Sherry of Decatur, Illinois and Thomas Pat Egan of Paris, Illinois; a half-sister, Cleta Harder of Brea, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was blessed with many special friends including, Mary Kay Smitley, Sheryl Bennett, Pam Harmon, Camille Baker, Jennifer Reeley, Ron Oakley, Gayle Oakley and Susan Arp. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Bob's parents, Don and Mary Hackett; a sister-in-law, Mary L. "Toody" Hackett; and her good friend and former employer, Ken Oakley.Mary was a graduate of Paris High School and attained her Bachelors in Education Degree from Eastern Illinois University. She taught high school in Festus, Missouri and in Kansas, Illinois before taking time off to raise her family. She returned to teaching after accepting a position at St. Mary's Catholic School in Paris. Following her retirement she enjoyed part-time work with B & G Greenhouses in Kansas.Mary was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Charleston and served as a volunteer with the Kansas Community Corporation. She loved nature and flower gardening and was known in town as the "the summer flowerpot lady" . For 26 years Mary helped to beautify the town of Kansas by maintaining colorful and attractive floral arrangements in the city's flower pots. She volunteered as a Girl Scout troop leader, was an avid reader, and a baker of delicious brownies and pecan pies.Mary will always be treasured as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a faithful friend to many, and a devoted educator of many young people whose lives she influenced in the classroom and beyond.Click to view Family Memorial Video.SERVICESThe Funeral Mass for Mary Hackett was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 1, 2017 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Father Hyland Smith officiating. Joyce Harwood, pianist accompanied cantor Jan Ziebka who led the singing of ""I Know That My Redeemer Lives"", ""Shepherd Me, O God"", ""This Is My Song"", ""The Lord Is My Light"", ""Song of Farewell"" and ""Amazing Grace"". Others assisting with the Funeral Mass were Deacon Jeff Beals and Carolyn Kolling, Eucharistic Ministers; Edie Breneman, Lector; Matt Ebinger and Brett Spout, Altar Servers; Dan Ensign and Jerry Herman, Ushers; Jeanette Nacke and Corrine Joyner, Greeters and Guest Registry; and Janet Roth and Jeanette Wrin, Gift Bearers. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Fairview Cemetery located east of Kansas, Illinois.
