Marjorie Lanman's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - M. Marjorie Lanman, age 92 of Charleston, entered her Heavenly Home on Thursday, January 28, 2016 in the comfort of her home and in the loving presence of her family. Visitation for family and friends will be held Sunday, January 31, 2016 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church located at 2206 Fourth Street in Charleston. Funeral Services honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the church, immediately following the visitation, with Reverend Dr. Bob Swickard officiating. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 1, 2016 at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. It is requested that thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church or to Camp New Hope which offers recreational programming for special needs individuals. Gifts may be left during the visitation or service or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. She was born Mary Marjorie Ashby on November 1, 1923, one of two daughters born to the late Orla H. and Blanche (Abernathy) Ashby. She married James R. Lanman on June 19, 1955 in Charleston and they celebrated 57 years of marriage prior to his death on December 21, 2012. She is survived by her children, Michael Lanman and wife Jode of Charleston, Jeanne Gossett of Grapevine, TX and Jill Lanman of Austin, TX; 5 grandchildren who affectionately knew her as "Mam-Mam" , Alexis, Natalie, Jared and Valerie Gossett and Ben Lanman; her sister, Jeanne (Ashby) Hall of Litchfield Park, AZ; three sisters-in-law, Imogene McClanahan of Charleston, Neva Cutri of Cathedral City, CA, and Wilma Lanman of LaVerne, CA; her brother-in-law, Robert Lanman and wife Dorothy of Charleston; and several nieces and nephews. Marge was a lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston where she volunteered when needed and was a part of bible study and prayer groups. She also participated in the Charleston Drama Club and along with Jim held memberships at the Charleston Country Club, Charleston Moose Lodge #1388 and the Charleston Elks, B.P.O.E. #623. She was also one of the first participants in the Adult Fitness Program at Eastern Illinois University. Marge was born and raised southeast of Charleston in Hutton Township. She left home at 12 years of age and moved to Charleston so that she could finish high school. At the young age of 16, she enrolled at Eastern Illinois University where she received her Bachelors Degree by age 20. During her time at E.I.U. as a student she was involved in band and the Commerce Club, serving as its president her senior year, and was a member of the Class of '44 that was inducted into Eastern's prestigious Livingston C. Lord Society. Marge continued her education at the University of Illinois, attaining her Masters Degree and completing all requirements but her dissertation for a PhD. She went on to teach business in the Charleston, Casey and Shelbyville public schools and at the U of I for five years before returning to Eastern in 1961, as a faculty member in what is now the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences, where she supervised student teachers in business for the next 25 years. Marge's family was always her priority and the recipients of her love and support. She was appreciative of others and because of her pleasant and gracious attitude she enjoyed many friendships.
