Lyle M. Overton's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Lyle M. Overton, age 86 of Charleston, died Tuesday, September 9, 2014 while at Hilltop Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Visitation for friends will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, located at 921 Madison Avenue in Charleston. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Father John Titus presiding. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. Lyle was born January 3, 1928 in Lerna, Illinois, the son of the late Glen H. and Eunice (Morgan) Overton. He married Pamela J. Driscoll of Charleston, Illinois on June 15, 1947 and they have celebrated 67 years of marriage. In addition to his wife Pamela, he is survived by four daughters, Jacqueline Derr and husband Robert of Asheboro, NC, Mary Wadland and husband Malcolm of Wheaton, IL, Teresa Fillman and husband William of Alpharetta, GA, and Julia Healy and husband Kelly of Coudersport, PA; eight grandchildren, Bryan Derr and wife Megan of Greensboro, NC, Sarah Hill and husband Collin of Raleigh, NC, Elizabeth Rush and husband Chad of Summit, NJ, Matthew Wadland of Riverside, IL, Michael Wadland of Wheaton, IL, Jonathan Fillman of Aspen, CO, Adam Fillman and wife Sarah of Fairchild, WA, and Emily Pepe and husband Adam of Austin, TX; six great-grandchildren, Mary Hill, James Hill, Thatcher Rush, Jane Rush, Lucas Fillman and Sawyer Fillman. Lyle is also survived by four brothers, Gene Overton, Jerry Overton and wife Jackie, Bill Overton and wife Marsha, all of Mattoon, Max Overton and wife Kathleen of Elkhart, IN; a brother-in-law, Jerry Hopper of Mattoon; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Lyle was preceded in death by a brother, Carroll "Bud" Overton; two sisters, Ila Mae Overton and Eileen Hopper; and a sister-in-law, Betty Overton. Mr. Overton lived most of his life in Coles County and attended Coles County schools. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Growing up on a farm, he had a life-time interest in agriculture, and he and his wife farmed until the late 1950's. In the late 50's Mr. Overton took a job with the Reasor Corporation and later went on to form his own successful construction/business. In 1968, he started Imperial Homes, manufacturing pre-cut custom designed buildings which included homes, apartments, office buildings and mortuaries. He eventually had buildings in almost all the states. Selling his business in the late 1980's and retiring, he enjoyed his family and friends, playing golf and traveling. He traveled in all but two states as well as to several countries in Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean. Mr. Overton was a faithful and active member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #4024, the Coles County Farm Bureau, Charleston Elks B.P.O.E. #623, and the Charleston Country Club. It is requested that thoughtful donations in his honor be made to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, the Charleston VFW, or the Salvation Army. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the church or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
