Lonnie R. Smith's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Lonnie Roe Smith, age 81 of Charleston, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2020 while at Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home in Mattoon. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2020 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. A Graveside Service, honoring and celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston with Reverend Tom Craig officiating. It is requested that thoughtful donations in his honor be made to the Alzheimer's Research Association. Gifts may be left at the visitation or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.
Lonnie was born June 1, 1938 in Plumfield, Illinois, a son of the late John and Ruby (Johnson) Smith. He married Jan Replogle on August 16, 1981 in Charleston and they have celebrated 38 years of marriage. In addition to his loving and devoted wife Jan, Lonnie is survived by three sons, Mike Smith of De Soto, Illinois, Jim Smith and wife Carol of Phoenix, Arizona, Tim Smith and wife Debi of St. Peter, Illinois; a stepdaughter, Elicia Slate-Monti and husband Rob of Champaign, Illinois; three grandchildren, Ashley Smith, Emiley Smith and Corey Smith and wife Jessica; four step-grandchildren, Jessica Degennaro, and Colin, Wyatt and Zach Monti; a step-great-grandson, Brody Degennaro; his brother, Earl "Tom" Smith of Herrin, Illinois and several nieces and nephews. Lonnie was also preceded in death by a brother, John "Jack" Smith.
Lonnie was a graduate of Christopher High School in Christopher, Illinois and furthered his education at S.I.U. Carbondale. He was an employee of the United States Postal Service for 30 years and many will remember him for his time at the Charleston Post Office. He was formerly a member of the Charleston Moose Lodge #1388 and was a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA).
Lonnie was a stock car racer in his early years and a longtime fan of NASCAR with Dale Earnhardt being one of his favorite drivers to follow. He was also a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Lonnie had a friendly and outgoing personality and was always so kind and helpful to all he assisted at the Charleston Post Office. He was a collector of stamps and enjoyed motorcycling and traveling. His family was precious to him and his best times were spent in their presence.
