Lindo James Smith's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Reverend Dr. Lindo James Smith, age 70 of Charleston, made the journey on Friday, April 14, 2017 and now resides with his Heavenly Father for all eternity. Services honoring and celebrating his life will begin at noon on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston with Reverend Bill Boaz and Pastor Tom Skinner officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 28, 2017 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston and for one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. It is requested that thoughtful donations in his honor be made to North Side Baptist Church. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or services or mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Lindo was born August 28, 1946 in St. Ann, Jamaica and was the son of the late James and Elva (Clarke) Smith. He is survived by his siblings, Shirley Smith of Ontario, Canada, Norma Hawthorne and Cheran Smith, both of St. Ann, Jamaica, and Leonard Smith of Atlanta, Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Lindo was a well educated individual with an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He was a graduate of the University of the West Indies Institute of Education in Jamaica and received a scholarship to study at Eastern Illinois University. While at E.I.U. he attained his Bachelors Degree as well as a Master of Arts in English Language and Literature and a Master of Science in Educational Administration. Dr. Smith received his PhD. in Educational Administration from Indiana State University. Dr. Smith's passion and the concentration of his career in education began in 1970 as a principal and teacher at Britton Ville Middle School and High School. He taught in both the private and public sector but most of his teaching career was at Decatur Eisenhower High School in Decatur, IL. Dr. Smith also held positions in various educational institutions across Illinois including Program Director, Language (Spanish/English) Professor, Dean, Language Arts Teacher, and Curriculum Development and Educational Administration. Dr. Smith established many professional relationships throughout his career along with many friendships during his years working at Oce Bruning and Moore Business Forms in Charleston. Dr. Smith devoted his life to Christ from a very early age and throughout his journey he acquired a wealth of certifications and accreditations for causes near and dear to his heart. In addition to teaching English, Spanish, mathematics, religious studies and music, he was currently serving as pastor of the North Side Baptist Church in Charleston where he devoted his out-of-classroom time providing counseling and visiting senior homes and hospitals. He was also an accomplished pianist. Dr. Smith was a gifted writer and a published author of seven books one of which was titled Spiritual Giants Who We Are in Christ. He participated in conferences and workshops nationwide and was most proud of his awards and honors in academics and sports and as recipient of the Gaylord Tull Award for his outstanding volunteer contributions to the welfare of the developmentally disabled.
