She was a 1955 graduate of Eastern Illinois State High School and on October 12, 1956 she married the love of her life, Leonard Wayne Hampton. They enjoyed and celebrated 56 years of friendship and marriage prior to his death on February 1, 2013. Left to cherish her memory are three children, Teresa Fonner and husband Joe of Lerna, Illinois, Greg Hampton and wife Ladine of Glendale, Arizona, and Mark Hampton of Charleston; four grandchildren, Nathan Hamilton and wife Chelsea, Greg Hampton, Jr., Nikki Walk and husband Andy and Sean Hampton; a step-grandson, Dr. Thomas Fonner; three great-grandchildren, Bradyn, Jillian and Fallon Hamilton; three step-great-grandchildren, Carson, Kendall and Will Fonner; her sister, Betty Centers of Charleston and her brother, Rex Mullins and wife Paula of Mattoon; her brother-in-law, Bill Hampton and wife Grace of Charleston; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her parents and husband, Linda was preceded by seven brothers, Richard, Norman, Dale, Gene, Don, Jim and Kenneth and two sisters, Florence Cooley and Wanda Snoddy.Linda was employed by Consolidated Communications for 21 years. She had such a special way of relating to people which complimented her position as a customer service representative. She was a long-time member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church family where she volunteered with the Altar Guild, sang in the choir and was a member of Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Coles County Ladies Home Extension. Linda was musically gifted and in her earlier years liked to dance, perform in theater and musicals, and was a medal recipient in local vocal contests. She truly enjoyed being outdoors and could quite often be found either working in her flower gardens or mowing the grass. She always maintained a neatly trimmed lawn, weed free flower gardens, and pots filled with beautiful floral arrangements. Family camping trips were enjoyed throughout the summer and she looked forward to hosting with Wayne the many fish fries and wiener roasts for family and many close friends. She was Wayne's right hand when he was tinkering in the garage and at his side during their travels and vacations. They especially looked forward to their trips to Arizona to visit Greg and his family, and agreed that the cruise to Cancun was most memorable. Linda was blessed with many joys in her life but it was her family which was the greatest - especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never missed an opportunity to spend time with them - showering them with love and affection.Linda's kind and gentle spirit, her gracious heart, and her warm and endearing smile, along with a desire to help others, allowed her to be a blessing to all she knew. She has been such a positive influence in the lives of her family and friends who will forever cherish their many loving memories. A sincere thank you is extended to Lincolnland Hospice and the wonderful staff at Arbor Rose who took such special care of Linda and her family.
