Lawrence J. Quinlan's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Lawrence Joseph Quinlan, age 71 of Charleston, passed away peacefully with loving family at his side on Saturday, August 18, 2018 while at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass honoring and celebrating his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 24, 2018 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 921 Madison Avenue in Charleston with Father Hyland Smith officiating. The Committal Service and burial will be at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at the Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville, Illinois. It is requested that donations in his honor be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Habitat for Humanity. Gifts may be left at the visitation/funeral mass or mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.Lawrence was born August 20, 1946, in Jacksonville, Illinois, a son of the late Lawrence J. Quinlan, Sr. and Helen (Tobin) Quinlan. He was a graduate of Routt Catholic High School in Jacksonville and furthered his education at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois before attaining a Pharmaceutical Degree from Creighton School of Pharmacy in Omaha, Nebraska. He owned and operated Family Pharmacy in Charleston for many years and following its sale to Walgreens continued to serve the community as a pharmacist for Walgreens until his retirement.Larry married Barbara Jeanne Jenkins on June 2, 1973 in Jacksonville, Illinois and has shared these past 45 years with the love of his life. In addition to Barbara, left to cherish precious memories are his three sons, Brian James Quinlan (Julie) of Downers Grove, Illinois, Christopher Thomas Quinlan (Katie) of Lombard, Illinois and Joseph John Quinlan (Brooke) of Bloomington, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Sean, Lucy, Oliver, Lailee, Chloe, Sayler and Renz; a brother, Michael Quinlan of Springfield, Illinois, two sisters, Mary Reilly of Jacksonville and Carol Marker (Jim) of Centerville, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Karen Quinlan of Hinckley, Illinois and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded by a brother, John Quinlan.Larry was a member of Our Saviour Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #868 when living in Jacksonville. Following the move to Charleston he became an active member of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church family and was actively involved in his community through the Kiwanis Club and as a member and past president of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce. Larry knew the importance of family and spending quality time together. They will always cherish the countless weekends spent at the lake home and on the water at Lake Mattoon, creating lasting memories of special times boating, swimming, fishing or sitting around a campfire. Larry always enjoyed traveling and following retirement, he and Barbara traveled extensively with Ireland and Singer Island being two of their favorite destinations. Larry was always a gentleman, genuinely kind to others and shared a smile with all he met. Funeral MassThe Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Lawrence Quinlan was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 24, 2018 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Father Hyland Smith officiating and Deacon Jeff Beals assisting. The eulogy was given by Dr. Roger Rives. Glenna Murphy, Pianist and Terry Coulton, Violinist, accompanied the Cantor, Lindsey Fraser in the leading of the congregational hymns which included: ""Here I Am, Lord"", ""On Eagle's Wings"", ""Shepherd Me, O God"", ""Song of Farewell"", ""We Are Called"", and ""You Are Mine"". Jim Coleman and Bob Jenkins, Sr. served as Lectors; Deacon Jeff Beals and Chris Sims as Eucharistic Ministers; Jerry Herman and Matt Piesckinski as Ushers and Gift Bearers; Samantha Fehrenbacher and Chase King as Servers; Vy Herman as Registry Hostess, Linda Grant as Greeter and Barbara Quinlan along with Chris, Brian and Joe Quinlan as Pall Attendants. Pallbearers were Bob Jenkins, Jr., Daniel Jenkins, John Jenkins, Luke Johnson, Jim Marker, Brian Quinlan, Chris Quinlan, Joe Quinlan and Pat Quinlan. Honorary Pallbearers were Larry Beasley, Jim Earnst, Bill Hay, Bob Jenkins, Sr., Quinn Marker, Dr. Leland McNeill and Dr. Roger Rives. The Committal Service and burial was at 4:00 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville, Illinois with Father Tom Meyer officiating. Visitation was held Thursday evening with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel.
