Lawrence Dean Harpster's Obituary
Lawrence Dean Harpster, age 84, of Charleston, IL, passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home in Mattoon, IL. He was born on March 2, 1941, to Lawrence and Edna (Robertson) Harpster. On July 2, 1960, he married the love of his life, Sharon Daily, at First Christian Church in Charleston.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Sharon Harpster of Charleston; four children, Randy (Karen) Harpster of Charleston, Laura (Garth) Henderson of Rapid City, SD, Lisa (Dave) Grovier of Charleston, and Greg Harpster of Charleston; three grandchildren, Hannah Harpster of Charleston, Cherilyn Henderson of Rapid City, SD, and Michael Grovier of Urbana, IL; and one great-grandchild, Dezmond Henderson of Rapid City, SD. He is also survived by two siblings, Bill Harpster and Linda Myers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Edna Harpster, and brothers, Gene and Norman Harpster.
A graduate of Charleston High School, Larry spent 40 years managing Harpster's Coles County Gas Company, with time in Paris (8 years), Dennison (4 years), and the remainder in Charleston. He retired in 2000.
Larry was a faithful member of East Harrison Street Church and had a passion for working on equipment, operating backhoes and farm machinery, and tending to his 11-acre property. A talented musician, he was the lead singer of the Country Boys Band and performed with several other groups for over 15 years.
A joint Celebration of Life for Larry and Sharon will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2025 from 2 to 4 pm with Pastor Tim Laymon officiating at East Harrison Street Church of God, 17996 Harrison St. Road, Charleston, IL 61920.
