Laura Kathryn Sims was born February 4, 1920, one of 14 children born to the late Hamilton and Laura Ethel (Edwards) Sims. Her marriage to Roscoe Joe Ryder on June 26, 1937 was the beginning of a marriage and friendship which lasted 56 years. She is survived by two of her three children, Charlotte Pfeiffer and husband Larry and C. Kent Ryder, all of Charleston; a daughter-in-law, Madelyn (Tootie) Ryder of Greenup; five grandsons, Herbert Holdren of Greenup, Joseph Holdren and friend Sondra Hudson of Jeffersonville, KY, Michael Ryder and wife Jessi of Greenup, Troy Pfeiffer and wife Amy and Brian Pfeiffer and wife Tisha, all of Charleston; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren with another on the way; and a brother, John Sims and wife Anneliese of Decatur, IL. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband on October 1, 1993; a son, James Ryder in September of 2014; and 12 siblings. During her younger years, Kathryn was employed at the Brown Shoe Company, but most of her life was spent creating a warm and loving home for her family and helping Joe with the farm. She was a member of the Hurricane Baptist Church, the DIY (Do It Yourself) Club, and was a 50 year member of the former Sopha C Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, where she served a term as Worthy Matron. Kathryn enjoyed their small farm located in Cumberland County just south of Diona. Outdoor chores such as mowing and gardening were often on her agenda; and when indoors she could be found enjoying such hobbies as sewing and quilting, or reading a good book. The best fried chicken came from her cast iron skillet and her kitchen often contained the aroma of freshly baked pies. Taking care of her family was Kathryn's number one priority and she truly enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the matriarch of her family who have experienced the blessings of her love and devotion.Click to view Kathryn's memorial video.
