Joseph Edward Grant, II's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Joseph Edward Grant, II, age 63 of Charleston, went to his Lord on Saturday, September 13, 2014 while at Casey Health Care Center, and following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. The Funeral Mass in celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church located at 921 Madison Avenue in Charleston with Concelebrants Father Jeff Grant and Father John Titus presiding. Inurnment will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Mattoon. Visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, September 24, 2014 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, thoughtful donations in his honor be made to Catholic Charities, St. Hedwig Haus of Hospitality, the Crisis Pregnancy Center or to a charity of the donor's preference. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the Visitation or Funeral Mass or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920. Joe was born May 31, 1951 in Charleston, the second of eleven children born to the late Jim and Jean (Shawver) Grant. Joe graduated from Mattoon Senior High School in 1969 after which he served in the United States Army. In 1972, he married Madonna "Donna" Cole of Neoga, Illinois and together they raised nine children. In addition to his wife of 42 years, he is survived by his children, Joseph E. (Tricia) Grant, III of Enterprise, KS, James (Stacy) Grant of Casey, IL, Peter (Nina) Grant of Mattoon, IL, Jacob (Mercy) Grant of Peoria, IL, Donna Jo Roach of Charleston, Joshua (Katie) Grant of Springfield, IL, Gabriel (Marissa) Grant of Charleston, Sarah (Geoff) Tomlinson of Fayetteville, NC and Jorge (Erica) Grant of Charleston; 15 grandchildren; his siblings, Jim (Barb) Grant of Charleston, Jean Grant of Peoria, Father Jeff Grant of Springfield, Julia (Scott) Hawkins of Hamden, CT, John (Jennifer) Grant of Columbus, OH, Jan (David) Hickox of Casey, Jennifer (Ron) Graham of Virden, IL, Jerry (Carolyn) Grant of Chicago, Joanne (Kim) Bauer of Decatur, and Jason (Michelle) Grant of Brentwood, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews. From a very young age, Joe was active in the farming community of Coles County and surrounding areas. It was this love of farming that provided material for his newspaper column. For thirty plus years, Joe entertained readers with a weekly farming piece along with family stories called "Uncle Joe Sez" . For his family and members of his church, he often played guitar, and he would perform the songs he had written.
