Jerry D. "Gomer" Montz, age 80, of Charleston, IL passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024. He was born July 9, 1943, the son of Robert Grant and Ella Mae (Irby) Montz in Charleston, IL.
Survivors include his life companion, Mary Bennett of Charleston, IL; son, Rob Montz (Melissa) of Charleston, IL; daughter, Jerri Lynn Calhoun of Charleston, IL; grandchildren, Natasha Pedigo (Tim) of Charleston, IL, Robert Montz (Jen) of Charleston, IL, Brandon Montz (Michaila) of Charleston, IL, Blayton Montz of Charleston, IL, and David Montz (Cari) of Charleston, IL; stepsons, Robert Bennett (Tris) of Charleston, IL, and Eric Bennett of Charleston, IL; step-grandchildren, Kayti Long (Benji) of Oakland, IL, Kelsee Lira (Jose) of Mattoon, IL, Hallie Bennett of Mattoon, IL, Charolette Bennett of Charleston, IL, Sherena Shepherd (Drew) of Charleston, IL, Gentry Bennett (Stefanie) of Mattoon, IL, Ashley Bennett of Charleston, IL, and Macie Bennett (Kevin Altenberger) of Effingham, IL; twenty-four great-grandchildren and one on the way; several nieces and nephews; and brother, Jack Montz (Nora) of Charleston, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Clarence "Buster" Montz, and son-in-law Patrick Calhoun.
Jerry was a 1961 graduate of Charleston High School and the longtime owner of Jerry Montz Plumbing and Heating, retiring in 2017. He was an active community member, previously affiliated with Moose Lodge #1175, Elks Lodge #623, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Charleston, IL. He was also a member of the Charleston bowling league. Jerry had a passion for hunting and fishing, never met a stranger, and was known for his wonderful sense of humor. He cherished his mornings with the McDonald's coffee group, where he and his friends would gather for daily conversations. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm. on Friday, May 31, 2024 at Adams Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jamey Cohoon officiating. Burial will follow at Mound Cemetery in Charleston, IL. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL.
