Jennifer Rae Black's Obituary
Jennifer Rae Black, 64, of Charleston, IL was called to become one with the creator of the universe; she transcends this world of mere paint and canvas for a galaxy of hues and tints where every day her muse is Love and her canvas infinity. Her passing was unexpected after suffering complications during surgery on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
Jennifer was born on November 29, 1959 in Indianapolis, IN to Dr. Henry and Patsy (Hogge) Black. After graduating high school, Jennifer relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, FL where she began her lifelong passion for helping others in the healthcare field and pursuing the arts.
In the 1990s, Jennifer relocated to Charleston, IL where her path took an unexpected turn into the realm of Supply Chain. As a Logistics and warehouse manager, she played a crucial role in ensuring critical supplies reached companies and individuals in need.
Driven by her passion for supporting local artists, Jennifer became deeply involved with the Eastern Illinois University community. In pursuit of fostering creativity and collaboration, she founded the Paper Café, a beloved venue where young, passionate artists could flourish. The Paper Café quickly became a hub for artistic expression, hosting unique and inspiring events that enriched both the local community and its surrounding areas.
Jennifer's legacy is one of artistic vision, community spirit, and dedication to nurturing creativity in others. Her impact on the arts community will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her last years were spent helping individuals to have great days with independence and dignity in their homes through working at Help at Home. It further punctuated her commitment to the community giving back to strengthen a greater cause that motivated her day to give back to others.
She is survived by her only son and the center of her universe, Ryan Bardwell (Shelly); her beloved granddaughter, Aubrey Bardwell; her brothers, Jon Black and Jeff Black (Sidney Salvadori-Black); and sister, Joanne Hirsch (Joe); her nieces and nephews, Rachel Hirsch (Malka), Jacob Hirsch, Nathan Hirsch, Sara Hirsch Davis (Kevin), Marcus Hirsch, Noah Hirsch, Ben Hirsch, Isaac Salvadori-Black, Carla Salvadori-Black, Madison Grossman, and Griffin Black, which she was lovingly referred to as "Zulu"; her great nieces and nephews, Aaron and Rafi Hirsch and Mia Hirsch Davis. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Henry and Patsy Black, and her partner, Dennis Vitulksi.
A memorial service to celebrate Jennifer's life and achievements will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2024 at Adams Funeral Chapel with Pastor Darrell Phillips Jr. officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tarble Arts Center, an institution close to Jennifer's heart and one she tirelessly supported. Donations may be mailed to EIU Foundation, Tarble Arts Center in memory of Jennifer Black, 860 W. Lincoln Ave., Charleston, IL 61920.
Jennifer's spirit lives on in the hearts of those she inspired and the communities she enriched. Her legacy of compassion, creativity, and community service will continue to resonate for years to come.
