James Conley's Obituary
James Michael Conley, 72, of Charleston, IL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Willow Breeze Hospice House in Mattoon, IL.
Born on August 23, 1952, in Dallas, TX, James was the son of James Alexander and June (Dowthitt) Conley. He lived a life marked by quiet strength, enduring faith, and a deep love for his family and community.
James is survived by his loving wife and lifelong best friend, Toni Bell; their two sons, Jordan and Kyle; their grandchildren Heighden, Brantley, and Paisley all of Charleston, IL; previous wife Sheryl Lenhart and their two sons, Seth Michael Conley and partner Molly Spaniel of Waxahachie, TX, and Ian Christopher Conley and his fiancée Tiffani-Amber Nicolle Howlett of Charleston, IL; his stepson, Jake and his wife Bernetta Bell of Charleston, IL; his stepdaughter, Ashley Bell of Charleston, IL; his grandchildren, Drew Bennett, Andrew Bell, Miles Conley, Hazley Ann Nicolle Carf, Elena Suzanne Nicolle Conley; and numerous other family and friends. He also leaves behind his brother, John Alexander Conley of Grand Prairie, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and his cherished daughter, Jann Michelle Conley.
After graduating from high school, James proudly served his country for two years in the United States Army, stationed in war-time Vietnam at just 18 years old. Following his military service, he settled in Charleston, IL, where he spent the remainder of his life. James devoted many years to his work as a building service worker at Eastern Illinois University, where he was respected for his reliability, strong work ethic, and kindhearted nature.
James was a faithful member of the New Mercy Worship Center. A pillar in the local AA and NA recovery communities, James marked over two decades of sobriety and was a source of encouragement, mentorship, and hope to many. His journey in recovery was one of his proudest accomplishments, and his support of others was unwavering.
James was a man who treasured life’s simple joys—he delighted in good food, meaningful conversations, and visits to Texas to spend time with his loved ones. His laughter, wisdom, and warm presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
