Harrison ""Harry"" Read, Jr.'s Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Harrison(Harry) Read, Jr., age 89 of Charleston, died on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at CharlestonRehabilitation and Health Care Center. Visitationfor family and friends will be held Friday (April 6) from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. FuneralServices will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at the funeralchapel with Reverend Jack Howard officiating. Interment, with Military Rites conducted by the Honor Guard of theCharleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592, will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery locatedsouthwest of Charleston. It is requestedthat memorial gifts in his honor be made to the Charleston Public Library. Gifts may be left on the memorial table atthe visitation or service, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 ShawneeDrive, Charleston, IL 61920. Read was born December 17,1922 in rural Calhoun, Illinois a son of W.H. and Maude Ellen (Jennings)Read. He and Mildred M. Schramm weremarried in Charleston on August 5, 1950 and she survives. Also surviving is his daughter, Melanie AnnAdams of Gahanna, Ohio; a niece Sharon Gardner of Mt. Erie, Illinois; nephews,Ronald Read of Olney, Illinois, William Read of Calhoun, George Knackmuhs ofWest Salem, Illinois and Lee Martin of Columbus, Ohio. Read was preceded in death by three sistersand two brothers. Read was a World War II ArmyVeteran (1943-1946) with service in both the European and Pacific Theaters ofOperations.After graduating from EasternIllinois University he taught at Marshall High School, was sports editor andcity editor of the Charleston Daily Courier and Director of Information andPublications at Eastern Illinois University. Read attended Central Christian Church in Charleston.
