Evelyn D. Metzger's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Evelyn Delores Croft Metzger, age 80 of Charleston, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2016 in the comfort of her Charleston home. The Funeral Mass honoring and celebrating her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church located at 921 Madison Avenue in Charleston, with Father Hyland Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at the church. Visitation for family and friends will follow from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Evelyn was born in Jasper County, Illinois on March 19, 1936, a daughter of Leonard and Forence (Kelly) Croft. She married James A. Metzger on September 2, 1956 in Montrose, Illinois. Evelyn is survived by her three sons, Michael , Alan and his wife Becky and Stan and his wife Linda, all of Charleston; six grandchildren, Bryan Metzger and wife Heather, Emma and Abby Metzger, all of Charleston, Dale Metzger and wife Yvette of Dallas, Texas, Trish Metzger of Denver Colorado, Kristin Miller and husband Nick of Washington, Illinois; seven great-grandchildren, Colby, Cowen, Charlotte, Henley, Layla, Paige and Conley; and one sister, Margaret Cain of Mattoon, Illinois. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, James A. Metzger; her parents; and two brothers, Eugene and Leland Croft. Evelyn was the consummate farm wife, nurturing mother and caregiver to family and friends. She was a 60 year member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Charleston. She and her husband were members of the Coles County Farm Bureau for 63 years. They were recognized in 1992 as the Coles County Soil & Water Conservation District Family Farm of the Year and the Coles County Farm Bureau Family of the Year. Evelyn loved to volunteer and to help others in need. For 38 years she volunteered countless hours to the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Guild. In 2015 she was recognized by the SBLHC Guild as the Volunteer of the Year. Evelyn also received recognition for her many years of volunteer service to St. Charles. The Springfield Diocesan Council of Catholic Women presented her with the 2013 "Our Lady of Good Counsel, Women of Distinction Award" . Evelyn enjoyed bowling and square dancing and cheering on her husband, sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at countless events including, horseshoe pitching, bowling, softball, baseball, volleyball and soccer games, and livestock shows at county fairs. Evelyn's family requests that memorial gifts in her honor be directed to the Coles County Farm Bureau Foundation or to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or funeral mass, or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.
