Eva Carrell's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Eva Martin Carrell, age 95 of Charleston, passed away in the comfort of her home on Monday, December 23, 2019. Visitation will be held from 11:00-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 2206 Fourth Street in Charleston. The Funeral Service, honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 11:30 with Reverend Tom Corum officiating. Burial will follow at Harmony Cemetery located north of Greenup, Illinois. Donations in her honor may be donated to Wesley United Methodist Church and left at the visitation/service or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.
Eva was born June 20, 1924 in Glasgow Scotland, the daughter of William Oliver Martin and Jane Ellen Girvan Martin. She met Keith Carrell, while he was stationed in Scotland, and they married in Glasgow on July 8, 1944. They celebrated nearly 42 years of marriage prior to his death on February 26, 1986. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Barbara Delaney, husband Dan and their five children and five grandchildren, who all reside in Illinois and Missouri; and, Patricia Maney, husband John and their two children who reside in Southern California and New York. She is also survived by the daughter of her son, Bruce Carrell, who is deceased.
Eva sailed to America on the Queen Mary in 1946 and entered America through Ellis Island in New York. She graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1960 with a degree in Elementary Education and she taught school in Sheldon, Illinois for nearly twenty years.
Eva loved to travel in the United States and abroad, always looking forward to the return trips to her homeland of Scotland. Following Keith's death, she decided to make Charleston her home, and became involved as a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, participating in bible study groups and other activities. Eva also enjoyed reading and writing and kept a daily journal, illustrating the story of her life. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.
Funeral Service
The funeral service honoring and celebrating the life of Eva Carrell was held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston with Reverend Tom Corum officiating. John Maney delivered the eulogy and Justin Maney gave the scripture reading. Musical selections included "Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond", "Amazing Grace" and "The Flower of Scotland". Burial followed in Harmony Cemetery located in Cumberland County north of Greenup, Illinois. Pallbearers were: Justin Maney, Jason Maney, Mike Wallace, Matt DeCuffa, Chase Young and Michael Delaney.
