Ellen Rose Burdon's Obituary
MATTOON, IL - Ellen Rose Burdon, age 86 of Mattoon and formerly of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at her Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home residence. Visitation will be held Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Memorial Services honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral chapel with Pastor Scott Sims officiating. A private inurnment for family will be held at a later time in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. It is requested that thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the Activity Fund at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home in Mattoon. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Ellen was born on January 30, 1927 in Hutton Township, Coles County, Illinois a daughter of the late Carroll L. and Gertrude M. Cox. She married Charles Burdon on September 1, 1983 and he preceded her in death on February 20, 1992. She is survived by a loving and devoted sister, Carolyn Dever and husband Ed of Charleston; five step-children and their families who reside in the Jacksonville, Florida area; and two nephews and their families, Bill Dever and wife Pam of Gulfport, MS and Jim Dever and wife Nancy of Canton, Illinois. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue (Popham) Thompson. After high school Ellen furthered her education by attending Eastern Illinois State Teachers College for three years. She was a resident of the Jacksonville, Florida area for 40 plus years where she was employed by the Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company as a statistician in its Actuarial Department. Following her formal retirement from Independent Life she worked at K-Mart as a lab technician. Ellen possessed a tremendous work ethic often working two jobs. She was a gifted crafter and displayed her talent through her beautiful needlework projects - she was meticulous in her needlepoint and crocheted beautifully. When Ellen moved back to the area she and Carolyn were able to reconnect and enjoy the closeness of being sisters and sharing memories of special times growing up.
