Elizabeth Ann Tucker's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Elizabeth Ann Tucker, age 100 of Charleston, passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2018 while at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home in Mattoon. Visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 2, 2018 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Funeral Services, honoring and celebrating her life, will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday with Pastor Jeff Stahl officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Cemetery, Charleston. It is requested that thoughtful donations in her honor be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children or to a charity of the donor's preference. Gifts may be left at the visitation or service or mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.Elizabeth was born December 14, 1917 in Champaign, Illinois, the daughter of John F. and Katie (Rose) Schertiger. She married Charles F. Tucker on December 11, 1937 in New Salem, Illinois and they shared sixty-four years of marriage prior to his death on June 25, 2001. She is survived by her grandchildren, Jon Cole and wife Kendra of Charleston and Julie Fulton and husband Ed of Troy, Illinois; two great-grandchildren, Allison Tyberendt and boyfriend Jeremy Izard of Troy and Hayden Cole of Charleston; and a cousin, Gene Rose and wife Betty of Champaign, Illinois. In addition to her parents and husband, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her stepmother, Amy Schertiger; her daughter, Patricia Cole; and her brother, Robert Schertiger.Elizabeth was a 1937 graduate of Eastern Illinois State Teachers College where she attained her teaching certificate. She taught school for a short time near Sadorus, Illinois before becoming a fulltime homemaker. Elizabeth and Charles were charter members of the Charleston Community Church and later became active members of Central Christian Church. She was a member of the Mattoon Elect Lady Chapter #40 and the former Sopha C Chapter #102 of Eastern Star for a combined total of more than 50 years. She was a member of the Coles County Genealogical Society, Coles County Historical Society, was a member and hosted a local reading circle, and volunteered with the Retired Volunteer Senior Program.Elizabeth enjoyed traveling and participated in numerous Elderhostels hosted by universities throughout the United States. She also enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and cheering for her beloved Illini basketball. Musical selections included ""Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere,"" ""His Eye Is On The Sparrow,"" ""In the Garden,"" ""Amazing Grace"" and ""Home."" Burial followed in Mound Cemetery, Charleston.
