Edwin A. Whalin's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Edwin A. Whalin, age 92 of Charleston, died on Sunday, May 29, 2016 while at Cumberland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Greenup, IL. Graveside Services honoring and celebrating his life will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at the Franklin Cemetery located north of Paris, IL with Reverend Dr. Bob Swickard officiating. It is requested that thoughtful donations in his honor be made to the Charleston Food Pantry. Gifts may be left during the graveside service or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Edwin was born March 6, 1924 in Barlow, KY a son of the late Edwin A. and Lula (Kimball) Whalin, Sr. He married Nola G. Crum on August 16, 1948 in Brocton, IL and they have celebrated 67 years of marriage. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Nola of Charleston; three children, Kathleen Whalin and husband Bob Morris of Sanford, ME, Brian Whalin, MD and wife Elaine of Stockport, OH and Jennifer Whalin of Rose Hill, IL; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded by a daughter, Phyllis Hirchert and a sister, Margaret Sanner. Edwin was a Canton, IL High School graduate and attained his Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He honorably served his country during World War II with the United States Navy. Dr. Whalin taught at the University of North Dakota for 12 years prior to accepting a position with Eastern Illinois University. He was a Physics Professor at E.I.U. from 1966 until his retirement. Ed was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston and a member of the Morning Star #734 Masonic Lodge in Canton, IL for more than 60 years.
