Douglas D. "Radar" Hicks' Obituary
Douglas D. "Radar" Hicks, age 72, of Charleston, IL (formerly of Nemaha, IA) passed away at 6:59 p.m. on Monday, July 29, 2024 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, IL. He was born October 25, 1951, the son of Dean Hicks and Thora (Poulson) Hicks Sorensen.
Douglas is survived by his loving wife, Karen Bussart of Charleston, IL; his sister, Deb Coughlon of Iowa; his brother, Dan Hicks of Iowa; and his dear friends whom he considered brothers, Rod and Toby Franklin of Charleston, IL. He also leaves behind several cherished nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his baby brother, Dustin Hicks.
After graduating from Crestland High School in Iowa in 1969, Douglas attended Iowa Central College in Fort Dodge, focusing on communications. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served honorably. Douglas pursued further education at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. He worked as an office supervisor for Jackson Hewitt Tax Service before retiring as a building service worker at Eastern Illinois University.
Doug, affectionately known as "Radar," was a life member of the Charleston Elks #623 and The Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses, and a member of the Charleston Moose Lodge #1388, and Paris American Legion Post #21. He was known for his infectious laughter and great sense of humor. An avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, he also enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and spending time with friends.
Services may be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Sarah Bush Cancer Center, 1000 Health Center Dr., Mattoon, IL 61938, or the donor's choice.
