Dorothy Hayes' Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Dorothy Kay Hayes, age 72 of Charleston, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Graveside Services honoring and celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at the Casey Cumberland Cemetery in Casey, Illinois with Reverend Bill Boaz officiating. There will be no Visitation. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in her honor be made to the New Hope Kickapoo Baptist Church or to the Charleston VFW Ladies Auxiliary Paul McVey Post 1592. Gifts may be left at the Graveside Services or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920. Dorothy was born in Charleston on August 12, 1938 a daughter of the late Gaylord K. and Ellen V. (Wilson) Houchin. She married Vernon Taylor and he preceded her in death on May of 2000. She later married Charles Hayes on February 13, 2006 in Charleston. She is survived by Chuck, her dear friend and loving husband; five stepchildren, Patty Taylor, Diana Taylor, Joe Taylor and Tina Taylor and their families, all of Oregon, and Gary Brock and wife Jana of Magnolia, Texas; three step-grandchildren, Jana Fisher and husband Andy, Dana Kwarteng and husband Ken, Candi Avila and husband Ed; numerous step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Houchin and Steve Huddlestun of Charleston; a sister-in-law, Jane Houchin of Charleston; a special aunt, Margaret Swann of Charleston; three nieces, Lisa Madlem and husband Rick, Colleen Stoner and husband Ron all of Charleston and Jean Pamplin of Champaign and their families; and a nephew, Kurtis Bailey and wife Sonya and family of Ada, Oklahoma. In addition to her parents and first husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by a brother, Eddie Houchin; a nephew, Edward K. Houchin; and a niece, Melinda Gill. Dorothy was employed for thirty-three years at Moore Business Forms in Charleston and was later employed as a sales clerk for Sears at the Cross County Mall in Mattoon. She was a member of the New Hope Kickapoo Baptist Church located south of Charleston and a member of the Charleston VFW Ladies Auxiliary Paul McVey Post 1592. She was a former member of the Women of the Elks Charleston Lodge #623. Dorothy was also a Lincoln Log Cabin volunteer and graciously donated many hours to their programs. Dorothy was an extremely talented seamstress and a superb cook - no one left her kitchen hungry. She took great joy in her beautiful flower gardens and bountiful vegetable garden, and was very meticulous when it came to her lawn and its appearance. She and Chuck shared the company of many friends - some they made while enjoying camping and others such as Kenny and Carolyn Bence, Art and Dee Beabout and Bob and Hazel Millage, whose special friendship and love and support has truly been a blessing. Dorothy will always be remembered for her generosity and her desire to help others which endeared her to her friends and family. Fond memories of her will be treasured by those who knew and loved her.
