Her parents, True and Irene (White) Thompson, owned a 40 acre farm where she grew up with her younger sister, Reta. Dorma attended Hutsonville High School until she graduated in May 1949. It was during those years that she fell in love with music, community involvement, and a young man at a movie theater. Music has always been a passion of Dorma's She listened to everything from gospel to jazz and would entertain with her own music on the piano. Her artistry was vast and expanded well-beyond the black and white piano keys; her talents allowed her to capture breath-taking scenery in each and every one of her paintings. Early on, she was never sure which was her best painting, but eventually, she discovered her true masterpiece was the family she raised, the neighbors she cherished, and the community she served. Serendipity fell upon Dorma one evening in 1946 when both she and George Hackler, the young man at the movie theater, stopped underneath a doorway to escape the rain. They were married three years later in the Ohio Chapel in West Union and celebrated sixty-four years of marriage together. Dorma was kind, accepting, and loving. Despite having her nickname "shorty," all who knew Dorma would attest that she was one of the strongest women they knew. She always faced adversity with courage. And often, she would say it was her faith, husband and family, friends, and, of course, moxie that helped her prevail. Since 1967, Dorma has been an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and served as the president of the United Methodist Women. She volunteered at the Coles County Council for Aging, the Charleston Food Pantry, and many other community-based organizations. She worked diligently and with enthusiasm at Moore's as an accountant for fourteen years. Dorma was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. She is survived by her son, Tim Hackler and his wife Karla; her son, Mark Hackler and his wife Tawnya; her daughter, Karla (Hackler) Hamilton and her husband Barry; her sister, Reta (Thompson) Bumpus; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Danielle (Hackler) Rotaru and her husband Mihai, along with their children Michael, Robert and Jamie and great-great-grandson Lucas; Isaac Hackler and his wife Julie, along with their children Jacob and Ianaa; Micah Hackler along with her children Samuel and Robbie; Jon Hackler and his wife Stacie, along with their children Noah and Lucas; Whitney Hackler; and Amanda (Collins) Logsdon, along with her children Brynn Leigh and Cayson.
