Dan was born June 24, 1947 in Charleston, a son of Robert Wayne and Norma (Ward) Woolever. His marriage to Vickie Sue Lang on April 28, 1967 was the beginning of a 48 year love story. She preceded him in death on February 22, 2016. Dan is survived by his children, Tema Metzler-Howard and husband John and Chad Woolever, all of Charleston; three granddaughters, Vanessa (Austin) Glassman of Jacksonville, NC, Alison Metzler and Natalie Metzler, both of Charleston; his mother, Norma Ashby and the man he knew as his father, Harold Ashby, both of Charleston; a brother, Larry (Penny) Woolever of Mattoon; two sisters, Jeanne Schacht of Mahomet, IL and Marty (Ric) Lang of Charleston; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his dad, Robert Woolever. Dan was a member of the Charleston High School Class of 1965. He held employment at Charleston Brown Shoe Company, Moore Business Forms and for many years was a semi-truck driver. His most rewarding job was with the Charleston School District as custodian at the Ashmore Elementary School. Mr. Dan, as he was affectionately known, was more than a custodian. He was the go-to-guy when things needed repaired and more importantly he was everyone's friend. Dan was a member of Salisbury Church and was a man of faith, whose Bible never gathered dust, he studied God's Word faithfully on a daily basis. He was also a member of the Hutton Masonic Lodge #698 A.F. & A.M. and the Charleston Moose Lodge #1388. Dan didn't have much time for hobbies as he always worked hard to support the family he so dearly loved. When he wasn't working he could be found mowing the lawn, tinkering in his garage or hiding out in his "man-cave" where he might be tuned in to a St. Louis Cardinals baseball, Pittsburgh Steelers football or an Illini basketball game. Dan loved animals and often went to the animal shelter to see if there was some way in which he could help. Dan was liked by everyone, especially the children who held a special place in his heart. The halls at Ashmore Elementary School echo the many stories of how Mr. Dan impacted the lives of students and staff in such a positive manner. Dan's love for his family was unconditional and he cherished his children and grandchildren. The admiration, respect and love that family and friends felt for Dan was earned and well-deserved, and their many fond memories will always be treasured.Click to view Dan's memorial video.
