Dan Klingenberg's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Walter Daniel Klingenberg, age 82 of Charleston and formerly of Athens, Ohio, passed away in the comfort of his home on Sunday, November 17, 2019. Visitation will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston with a Prayer Service beginning at 3:45 p.m. The Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2019 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church located at 921 Madison Avenue in Charleston with Father Braden Maher officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. Donations in his honor may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association and left at the visitation/mass or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.
Dan was born April 8, 1937 in Athens, Ohio, a son of the late Charles A. and Hannah Ruth (Vanderford) Klingenberg. He married Marilyn Sue McBride on August 17, 1957 in Athens and they have been blessed with 62 years of marriage and friendship. In addition to Marilyn, left to cherish their many memories are his children, Katherine Roller and husband James of Springfield, Missouri, Daniel Klingenberg and wife Lana of Stoughton, Wisconsin and Victoria Ferrario and husband Patrick of O'Fallon, Missouri. He also leaves 11 grandchildren, Lauren (Sam) Ackerman, Erin (Bryan) Young, Alexander (Jessica) Klingenberg, Hannah (Jensen) Nelson, Jonathon Klingenberg, Emily Ferrario, Lorelei Ferrario, Madeline Ferrario, Olivia Ferrario, Joseph Klingenberg and Corbin Klingenberg; two great-grandchildren, Quinn Ackerman and Margot Young; and a brother, Carl Klingenberg and wife RosaLee of Ohio. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Klingenberg, Doris Sellar, Bernadine Huber and Joanne Hansen; and a brother, Charles "Buddy" Klingenberg.
Dan graduated high school in Athens, Ohio and attained both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Mathematics at Ohio University. He held positions at Ohio University and Ohio State as well as University of Missouri Rolla (now Missouri S&T). He was at Harper College in Chicago where he founded the University Bookstore before accepting a position at Eastern Illinois University in 1992. Dan was the director of Text Book Rental at EIU for twelve years, retiring in 2004. He was one of the founding members of the Illinois Association of College Stores, and also served a term as its president.
Dan was a faithful member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Charleston. He was able to exhibit his love for music and singing through his participation in the church choir as well as a member of the Lake Land Choir. He enjoyed being outdoors, spending time in his garden and maintaining a well kept yard. He was a prolific woodworker creating children's toys as well as furniture for their home. He was a fan of John Deere and was always looking to add to his John Deere collection and his assortment of bird decorations. Dan loved the company of his cats and was also known for contributing not only to his own sweet tooth but providing for other's as well - there was always an assortment of candy available. Dan loved his family dearly and they will always treasure their many fond memories of this special husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Funeral Mass
The Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Dan Klingenberg was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2019 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Charleston with Father Braden Maher officiating. The visitation was held from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel the afternoon prior with a Prayer Service conducted by Father Braden at 3:45 p.m. Pianist, Ethan Hayward and Violinist, Terry Coulton, accompanied the Cantor, Deb Cuddy in leading the congregational songs of "O Loving God", "Shepherd Me, O God", "Alleluia", "Amazing Grace", "Prayer of St. Francis", "Song of Farewell", and "On Eagle's Wings". Others assisting with the Funeral Mass were: Al Joyner and Deacon Jeff Beals, Lectors; Laura Tucker and Deacon Jeff Beals, Eucharistic Ministers; Kay Wheeler, Carolyn Kolling, Cindy Sasco and Penny Clay, Pall Attendants; Dan Ensign and Ray Kuznicki, Ushers and Gift Bearers; Matthew Ebinger, Altar Server; Marjorie Hoedebecke, Registry Hostess; and Jeanette Nacke, Greeter.
Burial followed at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. Pallbearers were: Dan Klingenberg, Alex Klingenberg, Carl Klingenberg, Sam Ackerman, Jonathan Klingenberg, Patrick Ferrario, Jenson Nelson, and Bryan Young. Honorary Pallbearer was Jim Roller.
