CHARLESTON, IL - D. Carolyn Bence, age 91 of Charleston, joined her heavenly family on Saturday, March 4, 2017 while at Hilltop Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Funeral Services, honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday with Jeanine Snearly officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. Thoughtful donations in her honor may be made to Lincolnland Hospice or to a charity of the donor's preference. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or services, or may be mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. She was born Dorothy Carolyn Green on January 2, 1926 in Ashmore, Illinois, a daughter of the late Wayne and Mary (Gilbert) Green. She married Charles Winkler in March of 1944 and he died suddenly in an auto accident on May 8, 1973. She later married Robert Gordon who predeceased her in 1992. Since March 23, 2002, Carolyn has shared her life with husband Ken Bence, and they have enjoyed spending their winters in Florida and sharing much laughter and good times with close friends. In addition to her loving husband Ken, Carolyn is survived by her caring and devoted daughter, Sandy Buell and her husband Jon of Mt. Zion, Illinois; three grandsons, Todd Buell of Fort White, Florida, Blake Buell of Mt. Zion and Michael Christopher Winkler of Washington; a great granddaughter, Chelsea Buell; two sisters, Janet (Rex) Duzan of Villa Grove, Illinois and Bobbie James of California; several nieces and nephews and their families; along with Ken's children and their families. In addition to her parents and two husbands, Carolyn was predeceased by a son, Charles Michael Winkler; a sister, Frances Ferguson; and two brothers, Maurice Green and John Harvey Green. Carolyn was an employee of Moore Business Forms in Charleston for more than 30 years. When married to Charles they attended and were active members of the former Rardin Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed going out to eat and sharing fellowship with her Lunch Bunch group, and formerly held membership in the Coles County Ladies Home Extension and the Women of the Moose Charleston Chapter 1175. Carolyn's personality radiated kindness and generosity to everyone. She enjoyed traveling, watching and feeding the birds, and sharing in laughter and fun with friends and family. She and Sandy enjoyed many memorable shopping trips as Carolyn always liked to be fashionably dressed and was meticulous about her appearance. Carolyn's family always remained near and dear - her grandsons held a special place in her heart, she was the most wonderful mother to Sandy and loving wife to Ken. She will forever be lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
