Clarence E. Stanley's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Clarence Edward Stanley, age 87 of Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at his Brookstone home in Charleston. Visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 902 Cleveland Avenue in Charleston. Funeral Services honoring and celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Ken Hoover officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Honor Guard of the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592. It is requested that thoughtful donations in his honor be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Clarence was born on February 10, 1926 in Urbana, Illinois a son of the late John and Anna (Reinhold) Stanley. He was married to Lila (Rudicil) Stanley and they were blessed with six children. He is survived by five children, David Stanley of Mattoon, Chuck Stanley and wife Janie of Springfield, Illinois, Sue Kirby and husband William of Champaign, Illinois, Jane Harwood and husband Phil of Jackson, Tennessee, and Nancy Dean of Lafayette, Indiana; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and his sister, Helen Adams of Portland, Maine. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Robert Stanley; two sons-in-law; and a brother, Enos Stanley. Clarence was a 1945 graduate of Urbana High School. He enlisted in the United States Army and faithfully served his country during World War II. Following his military service he furthered his education at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he attained a Masters Degree. He retired in 1989 after 35 years of service with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) as a resident engineer in the Paris, Illinois office. Clarence was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Charleston where he was actively involved in Bible Study groups and served on various committees. He was a former member of Toastmasters, was a Rules of the Road Instructor for AARP, and a member of the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592. As a Master Gardener, Clarence thoroughly enjoyed gardening and tending to his many fruit trees in his orchard. He also participated in such hobbies as fishing and bowling. Clarence dearly loved his family, was a good father and role model for his children and truly enjoyed being with his grandchildren and supporting them in their many activities. Clarence's family will fondly treasure their many loving memories of this special man they knew as dad and grandpa.
