Charles Michael Scott's Obituary
Charles Michael Scott, affectionately known as Mike, age 71, of Charleston, IL, passed away at home on Monday, May 5, 2025. He was born on October 2, 1953, in Mattoon, IL to Rev. Earl and Betty (Hendrickson) Scott.
He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Joy Scott of Charleston; seven children, Michael (Ilean) Scott Jr. of Menominee, MI, Richard (Micky) Scott and Josh (Jessica) Scott, both of Spanaway, WA, Sean (Heather) Kelly of Charleston, IL, Erin (Raul) Bedolla of Urbana, IL, Jenni (Jacob) Matthews of Trilla, IL, and Shannon (Andrew) Bulla of Waterloo, IL; twenty grandchildren, Anthony Scott, Brandon Scott, Logan Scott, Madeline Scott, Wyatt Scott, Violet Scott, Eland Lawson, Annabelle Matthews, Levi Matthews, Carrick Matthews, Nolan Kelly, Natalia Bedolla, Bastian Bedolla, Makayla Bedolla, Tristan Bedolla, Logan Bedolla, Rose Bulla, Edmund Bulla, Henry Bulla, and Madeleine Bulla; two brothers, Richard (Chris) Scott of Palm Coast, FL, and Bill (Judy) Scott of Denver, CO; and one sister, Barbara (Ray) Miles of Westfield, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, John, sister, Karen, and his beloved grandchild, Gwen Lawson.
Mike attended Mattoon High School. Mike proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, stationed in Germany during the Vietnam era. After returning home, he began training as a skilled pipefitter and electrician. Mike married Janice South in 1974, and they raised three sons. Mike was proud to work in the trades. He worked at a variety of locations, always adding to his knowledge and certifications. He worked for three different universities, finally retiring from Eastern Illinois University, where he had progressed to using computers to control the HVAC systems.
On July 19, 2008, he married the love of his life, Joy, in Charleston, IL. Together they traveled extensively and enjoyed spending time with their combined children and grandchildren.
A man of many passions, Mike found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was known for telling jokes and stories. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, camping, and fly tying. He also had a lifelong appreciation for motorcycles, often enjoying the freedom of the open road. Whether casting a line, tying a perfect fly, or spending time around a campfire, Mike felt most at home surrounded by nature.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL. A funeral service honoring Mike’s life will follow at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Mark Cartwright officiating. Burial with Military Rites will take place at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston following the funeral service.
